Job summary

Xcel Energy seeks an Engineering Intern in the Southwestern Public Service area to work with experienced engineers on power system reliability, protection and coordination, outage analysis, modeling and capital projects. The internship starts May 24, 2027 and may extend beyond the term based on performance and business needs.

The role is hybrid; interns may work full-time in summer (up to 40 hours) or part-time during the school year (up to 20 hours).

Qualifications

• Current student, Sophomore or higher
• Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering
• Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy
• Interest in energy industry and the future of energy

Responsibilities

• Support electric distribution reliability and outage investigations, including CEMI/DEMI analysis
• Assist with protection and coordination studies for distribution feeders and equipment
• Support capital project development and distribution system improvement initiatives
• Participate in field visits to substations, distribution facilities, and construction projects
• Utilize utility engineering software and databases to evaluate system performance and operating conditions
• Collaborate with engineers and technical staff to solve real-world electric utility challenges
