Job summary

Xcel Energy in Amarillo, TX is seeking an Area Engineering Intern to support the reliability, safety, and operation of the electric distribution system. You will work alongside experienced engineers on real-world utility projects and gain hands-on experience in power system analysis, protection, and capital improvement initiatives.

The internship runs toward a May 31, 2027 start date with potential extension based on performance and business needs.

Qualifications

• Current student, Sophomore or higher
• Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering
• Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) or part-time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commute to the designated work location in-person under the hybrid policy

Responsibilities

• Support electric distribution reliability and outage investigations, including CEMI/DEMI analysis
• Assist with protection and coordination studies for distribution feeders and equipment
• Support capital project development and distribution system improvement initiatives
• Participate in field visits to substations, distribution facilities, and construction projects
• Utilize utility engineering software and databases to evaluate system performance and operating conditions
• Collaborate with engineers and technical staff to solve real-world electric utility challenges
