Xcel Energy invites applications for a Substation Field Engineering internship in Amarillo, TX. You will support engineers in substation capital and maintenance projects, read electrical schematics, and help evaluate equipment performance under the guidance of experienced professionals.

The internship runs with a May 24, 2027 start date, offering hybrid work options, up to 40 hours a week in summer and up to 20 hours during the school year, and a starting pay range of $19.30 to $24.60 per hour.

Qualifications

• Current student enrolled in ABET‑accredited college or university pursuing Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
• Frequent day travel will be required.
• Overnight travel may be required for specific projects, but is rare.
• Ability to work full-time during summer (up to 40 hours/week) or part-time during school year (up to 20 hours/week) at the designated location, per hybrid policy.

Responsibilities

• Support engineers in substation capital and maintenance projects.
• Develop proficiency in reading electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.
• Assist with troubleshooting substation equipment and evaluating corrective actions.
• Review equipment test results and help assess condition and performance.
• Manage small-scope engineering projects from planning through completion.
• Gain exposure to substation design, maintenance, testing, and field operations.
