Job description

The COMET contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.

Responsibilities

Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:

  • Candidate will perform engineering work in preparation for assembly, test, processing, and launch of NASA’s Space Launch System in support of the Artemis program.
  • Develop new and sustain existing Ground Support Equipment and Special Test Equipment for the Hazardous Gas Leak Detection Subsystem.
  • Create and maintain CREO and AutoCAD drawings per ASME Y14 standards utilizing Windchill Product Lifecycle Management software.
  • Design, modify, peer review, and check assembly drawings, electrical & mechanical schematics, cable & harness drawings, and component drawings.
  • Provide practical application of engineering skills to perform ground system engineering projects for instrumentation systems to meet stakeholder expectations, system functional requirements, and NASA program requirements.
  • Conduct system testing & validation, troubleshoot & investigate equipment failures, interpret data, and analyze technical drawings & schematics to resolve anomalies and provide corrective action.
  • Conduct hardware and systems qualification and validation testing to verify designs satisfy system requirements.
  • Candidate must be able to collaborate in a team environment, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and/or accomplish them simultaneously, and comprehend and analyze complex problems and develop solutions.
  • Candidate must have the ability to work with minimal supervision and only general guidance. Must be motivated to learn and execute.
Qualifications – External

Bachelor of Science in Engineering or technical equivalent from an accredited institution; at least four years of experience.

  • Experience in troubleshooting electrical and mechanical systems a plus.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and controls systems is a plus.
  • Knowledge of general sensor applications is a plus.
  • Familiar with ASME Y14 series specifications.
  • Familiar with ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with PTC Creo / Windchill PLM.
  • Experience with AutoCAD.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficient in report writing as well as technical presentations.
  • Familiarity with the latest design and safety regulations for electrical control panels including those in hazardous locations such as Class I, Division 2.
Essential Functions
Physical Requirements
  • Will be required to climb stairs to access equipment for troubleshooting.
  • Climbing ladders and platforms will be necessary.
  • Will be required to wear hearing protection, eye protection and other associated personal protective equipment.
  • Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing.
  • Physical requirements are sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures.
  • Must be able to work in tight confined space areas.
Work Environment
  • All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and Company safety standards.
  • Will be required to work inside and outside throughout the test complex.
  • Position requires daily individual to travel to different areas on site.
  • Walking on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt/sand is required to access various locations on the facility.
Equipment and Machines
  • Cranes and other heavy equipment such as crane carriers, Hi-Rangers, man lift platforms, hydraulic lifts, spider staging, converter dollies, cargo lift trailers, and tractor/trailers.
  • Operate computer terminals, personal computers, and related computer peripheral equipment to maintain/adjust database logs and records, print documents and record work performance.
  • Personal computer, scanner, copy machine, telephone, laser printer, fax machine, and other office equipment including desk supplies.
Attendance
  • Work assignments are normally 8 hours shifts, 5 consecutive days per week.
  • Must be dependable and punctual.
  • Occasional overtime, sometimes with short notice, is required to meet demanding schedule.
Other Essential Functions
  • If offered a position, proof of U.S. Citizenship or Legal Permanent Resident/Green Card holder of the United States is required.
  • Needs to have clear, concise, and accurate communication skills.
  • Must have ability to work well with office staff and customer representatives.
  • Government security clearance may be required in the future.
  • Must be able to travel to support position requirements. This may include travel to and from customer location, which may involve airline travel. In some cases, accommodations can be made for POV, if necessary.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relations with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CDL with endorsements Florida driver’s license.
  • Must pass a federal background investigation.
  • Must comply with all “drug free workplace” requirements as mandated by directives issued by the appropriate federal contracting officer and the company, which requires drug testing for use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions.
