Job description

Electrical Designer

This Electrical Designer position places production design at the center of the work. The designer takes projects from start to finish in Revit and AutoCAD, with little hand-holding, for a full-service MEP consulting firm. The work spans retail, industrial, churches, schools, government, and multifamily projects, and the firm keeps workload evenly distributed across the team. Project lengths vary from quick two-week jobs to engagements that run eight months or more.

The firm is a second-generation practice led by partners who took over in 2010 and plan to pass the firm on. Partnership is a realistic aim, case by case, for someone who takes good care of clients. The schedule is hybrid, with one required office day each Wednesday and the remaining days from home. The designer is expected to move into project management once proven with clients and the team, and to take over seals and move into mentorship and QC over the next 5 to 8 years.

Salary Range: $115,000 - $120,000 / Year DOE

Electrical Designer Responsibilities
  • Produce electrical designs in Revit and AutoCAD from day one, covering power, lighting, and fire alarm systems for commercial buildings
  • Take projects from start to finish with a high degree of independence, managing roughly three to four clients at a time
  • Deliver work across a wide range of project types, including retail, industrial, churches, schools, government, and multifamily
  • Coordinate with architects, the firm's primary client group, and meet with clients directly once the team is comfortable, typically within about six months
  • Conduct site visits and surveys, averaging about every other week, with occasional out-of-state travel
  • Support QA/QC reviews and mentor junior electrical staff, with this involvement growing over time
  • Move into project management once proven with clients and the team, owning schedules and client follow-ups and pulling the design team together
  • Transition toward mentorship and quality control over the next 5 to 8 years, while remaining available to contribute to production as needed
  • Provide backup support for the firm's network and systems design when holding an RCDD
Electrical Designer Requirements
  • 7+ years of electrical, lighting, and fire alarm design for commercial buildings at an MEP consulting firm, with candidates holding slightly less experience considered for the right fit
  • Strong, hands-on proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD
  • Willingness to perform production design work, not only management or QC
  • Experience gained primarily in a U.S. engineering office designing MEP systems for buildings
  • A stable work history with long tenures at prior firms
  • Availability to be in the office every Wednesday and to attend site visits
  • PE licensure, or progress toward the PE (FE/EIT), with the ability to register in multiple states and take over seals within the next 5 to 8 years is preferred
  • RCDD certification is preferred
  • Telecom and data communications design experience is preferred
Benefits
  • Employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee, with dependents available at a low cost
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage at no cost to the employee
  • Paid time off that increases with tenure, along with paid company holidays and a floating holiday
  • SIMPLE IRA retirement savings plan with an employer match
  • Mileage reimbursement for site visits
  • Hybrid schedule with one office day per week

Experienced MEP designers who want hands-on production work, a wide variety of building types, and a credible path toward project management and partnership are encouraged to apply today.
