About the Role

The Meter Reader reports to the Meter Services Supervisor and plays a key role in reading and inspecting gas, electric, and water meters. The position requires extensive walking outdoors, excellent time management, and flexibility.

  • Pay: $20/hr. Employees are eligible for a productivity incentive based on meters installed beyond a threshold.

What You'll Do

  • Read meters daily or as scheduled, typically on customer premises.
  • Complete assigned duties within required timeframes, assign sequence numbers, and adjust routes as needed.
  • Inspect meters for damage or malfunctions and report issues.
  • Evaluate unsafe conditions and maintain meter boxes.
  • Use various tools and devices, including manual tools, electronic meters, and digital communication devices.
  • Assist in training new meter readers.

Read meters in various environmental conditions, walking long distances in weather extremes, and exerting physical force when necessary.

Customer Communication

  • Address customer complaints appropriately and provide general meter service information.

About You

Must Haves:

  • Education: None required; must be 18 or older.
  • Experience: None required; training provided. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Nice to Have:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 1 year of outdoor meter reading experience or similar outdoor work, or 6+ months working outdoors with the same employer.

  • Excellent communication and customer interaction skills.
  • Professionalism in handling negative customers.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Role Fit:

  • Not suitable if you dislike independent outdoor work, long walks, or lack flexibility and time management skills.

Drug/Alcohol Testing:

  • Required per non-regulatory and federal DOT regulations for certain roles.
