Job description

Job Title: Electric Apprentice Lineman

The City of Norcross is seeking a full-time Electric Apprentice Lineman. This position is designed as an entry-level opportunity to learn and develop skills toward becoming a Journeyman. It serves as the initial phase (trainee status) on a career path within the Norcross Power Department.

The incumbent will work under daily supervision from the supervisor and senior team members. The goal is to learn the duties, gain experience, and progress along the career track.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain line and bucket trucks.
  • Learn to operate all equipment used by the electric department.
  • Handle poles, including moving, lifting, setting, and pulling.
  • Assist in maintenance and construction of electric facilities.
  • Conduct rescue procedures.
  • Learn and apply all safe work practices.
Education and Work Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Some knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in power line construction and maintenance.
  • Willingness to learn skilled tasks in line work.
  • Ability and willingness to climb poles and work at heights with high voltage lines.
  • Learn and observe safety precautions, assist in first aid and resuscitation.
  • Compliance with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Part 382 policy on substances and alcohol testing.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License issued by Georgia.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform other duties as assigned. Be 'on-call' and respond promptly to emergencies and management requests.

Scope and Impact:

High need for accuracy and effective use of routines. Errors can waste resources and impact performance. Work is generally independent but verified; work priorities are set by supervision.

Communications/Customer Contact:

Interactions typically involve service professionals, co-workers, other employees, and the public, mainly to provide services and resolve issues.

  • Knowledge of public administration principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with local government rules, city codes, and legal aspects.
  • Understanding of financial administration and budgeting.
  • Ability to develop plans from instructions.
  • Supervisory and planning skills.
  • Self-motivated with minimal supervision.
  • Clear and concise report and letter writing skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly in a changing environment.
  • Knowledge of City utility operations.
Working Conditions:

Physical demands include sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. May involve lifting objects up to 100 pounds, using dexterous equipment, distinguishing colors, and physical restraint. Work is outdoors, often in extreme weather, with protective gear required. Noise levels are moderate.
