Job summary

Fayetteville Public Works Commission seeks an Electric Meter Service Technician to install, test, maintain, and troubleshoot commercial metering systems. You will work with CTs, transformers, and related wiring to ensure accurate metering and reliable service.

The role involves energized work, outages, and extended hours, with opportunities to support transmission and distribution crews and perform on both overhead and underground services.

Qualifications

• Two-year degree in engineering or electrical technology.
• Minimum of two years’ experience as electric CT meter tech or related utility role.
• Equivalent education/training and experience acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Install, test, maintain, and troubleshoot commercial and industrial electric metering systems.
• Install and maintain current transformers (CTs), voltage transformers, meters, and wiring.
• Investigate metering issues, power outages, service abnormalities, and equipment failures.
• Troubleshoot and repair high-current, high-voltage meter services.
• Read meters and perform meter testing activities.
• Assist line crews and substation personnel with transmission and distribution equipment.
• Perform emergency repairs and service restoration during outages.
• Work on overhead and underground electric services.
• Operate bucket trucks, meter testing equipment, CT testing equipment, and power quality devices.
• Create, track, dispatch, and complete work orders and service requests.
• Prepare reports, logs, and supporting documentation.
• Provide technical assistance regarding meter services and customer accounts.
• Safely work on energized electrical services and equipment when required.

Job description

Fayetteville Public Works Commission is seeking a skilled Electric Meter Service Technician to support the installation, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of commercial and industrial electric metering systems. This position specializes in instrument-rated metering using current transformers (CTs) and related equipment while supporting the reliable delivery of electric service throughout the community.

The successful candidate will work with energized and de-energized distribution, transmission, and generation equipment, investigate meter-related issues and service abnormalities, respond to outages, and provide technical expertise for complex metering installations and repairs. Extended hours, emergency standby, and call-back availability are required.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, test, maintain, and troubleshoot commercial and industrial electric metering systems.
• Install and maintain current transformers (CTs), voltage transformers, meters, and associated wiring.
• Investigate metering issues, power outages, service abnormalities, and equipment failures.
• Troubleshoot and repair high-current, high-voltage instrument-rated meter services.
• Read commercial and industrial electric meters and perform meter testing activities.
• Assist line crews and substation personnel with transmission, distribution, and generation equipment.
• Perform emergency repairs and service restoration activities during outages.
• Work on both overhead and underground electric services.
• Operate bucket trucks, meter testing equipment, CT testing equipment, and power quality monitoring devices.
• Create, track, dispatch, and complete work orders and service requests.
• Prepare reports, logs, and supporting documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following combinations:

• Graduation from a two (2) year accredited college/technical school with a degree or certification in engineering/ electronic/electrical technology and a minimum of two (2) years of experience as an electric CT meter tech, service lineman, or related field working in/for an electric utility; OR
• Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma and a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience as defined above; OR
• An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

• Experience with commercial and industrial electric metering.
• Knowledge of instrument-rated metering and current transformer (CT) installations.
• Understanding of electrical theory and utility operations.
• Experience working on energized electrical systems.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Knowledge of meter forms and their proper application.
• Experience using CT test equipment, meter test standards, and power quality recording equipment.
• Familiarity with overhead and underground electric distribution systems.
• Strong troubleshooting and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to communicate technical information effectively.
• Moderate computer skills and experience using utility work management systems.
• Strong problem-solving, organizational, and customer service skills.

Additional Requirements

• Must obtain and maintain a North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment.
• Must maintain required safety certifications and training.
• Must remain current on industry practices through ongoing training and professional development.
• Ability to work extended hours, emergency standby assignments, and call-back situations.
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
