Job summary

The Fayetteville Public Works Commission is seeking a Utility Field Service Technician to perform field service, metering, inspection, and troubleshooting for water and electric meters. You will respond to customer inquiries, install and verify meters, analyze readings, and document activities using handheld devices and GIS tools.

Extended hours and on-call availability are required, with responsibility for maintaining vehicles and supplies while ensuring safety and accuracy in all field

Qualifications

  • Prepares, maintains, and updates accurate records, reports, work orders, meter information, and service documentation using Excel and other applicable systems.
  • Operates vehicles safely while performing assigned field duties and traveling to service locations.

Job Summary:

The Utility Field Service Technician performs a variety of customer field service, metering, inspection, and troubleshooting activities in support of the Metering Services Department of the Public Works Commission. This position responds to customer inquiries and service concerns; inspects, installs, removes, replaces, and verifies the functionality of water and electric meters; investigates meter alerts, irregular readings, potential tampering, water leaks, and emergency utility conditions; and completes assigned field activities through the Work Management System. Work includes using handheld devices, Mobile Data Terminals, laptops, GIS resources, and related technology to document activity, access service information, evaluate meter performance, and maintain accurate records and reports. The position also maintains assigned vehicles, tools, equipment, supplies, and inventory necessary to perform field work safely and efficiently. Extended hours and on-call availability are required. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Utility Field Service/Loss Control Supervisor and in accordance with established policies, procedures, and safety standards. Performs related work as required.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Responds to customer inquiries, service requests, complaints, and field-related concerns in a professional and timely manner.
  • Completes assigned field activities through the Work Management System, prioritizing service locations and route efficiency.
  • Inspects, tests, installs, removes, replaces, and verifies the operation of water and electric meters, including AMI meters and automated meter reading equipment.
  • Analyzes meter functionality, meter readings, voltage conditions, pressure concerns, and service irregularities to determine appropriate corrective action.
  • Investigates meter alerts, skipped accounts, priority readings, customer-challenged readings, potential tampering, high usage concerns, and water leaks within PWC’s service responsibility.
  • Identifies, locates, troubleshoots, and resolves field service issues using appropriate tools, equipment, technology, and established procedures.
  • Responds to and reports emergency electric and water service conditions in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Prepares, maintains, and updates accurate records, reports, work orders, meter information, and service documentation using Excel and other applicable systems.
  • Uses handheld devices, Mobile Data Terminals, laptops, GIS resources, and related technology to access service information, locate meters, and document field activity.
  • Delivers and explains service agreements, notices, meter readings, and field service information to customers as needed.
  • Participates in meter change-out programs and supports departmental initiatives related to meter maintenance and service reliability.
  • Performs daily vehicle inspections; maintains assigned vehicles, tools, equipment, supplies, and truck inventory; and requests service or replenishment as needed.
  • Operates vehicles safely while performing assigned field duties and traveling to service locations.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
Licenses/Certifications:
  • Must possess/maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to work in field environments and perform duties that may require walking, standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing, and working in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Grade 404 $18.75-$24.71/Hourly
