Job summary

Owensboro Health Regional Hospital is seeking an experienced EEG Technologist to perform diagnostic EEGs, LTME, and vEEG in the Neurodiagnostics department. You will educate patients, monitor and document studies, and maintain equipment to ensure high-quality recordings.

The role requires ABRET certification and BLS within 90 days, with at least 6 months in patient care and strong knowledge of neurophysiology. 72-hour per-pay-period schedule and 0.9 FTE apply.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 6 months' experience in direct patient care.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • BLS certification required within 90 days of employment.
  • ABRET registration required upon hire.

Responsibilities

Weekend Requirements: As Needed | Work Hours: 6:00am-6:30pm | Status: Full Time - 0.9 FTE (72 hours per pay period) | Entity: Owensboro Health Regional Hospital | Department: Neurodiagnostics

Job Summary

Performs diagnostic electroencephalograms (EEGs), long term monitoring (EMU) vEEGs, evoked potential studies (ABR/VER), and providing patient education associated with studies.

Job Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates knowledge of neuroanatomy, physiology, basic electronics, electrical safety, END instrumentation, pattern recognition, and various medical and pharmacological conditions that influence END procedures.
  • Obtains and documents EEG readings as directed.
  • Reviews patient's record and instructs patient prior to and during procedures.
  • Monitors patients during procedures and reports any abnormal findings. Identifies and corrects artifacts.
  • Notes and forwards results to physicians for analysis and interpretation.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies.
  • Monitors and processes EEGs in the EEG software and the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Performs EEGs and LTME in EMU and ICU under direct supervision and in accordance with the standards and protocols of the laboratory.
  • Measures and accurately applies electrodes in a timely manner and with appropriate impedances.
  • Demonstrates competency in multiple electrode application techniques
  • Documents a comprehensive patient history gathering appropriate information from patient, patient's record, and family members including neurological symptomatology and medications.
  • Verifies identity of patient and provides adequate patient ID on all studies.
  • Protects patient confidentiality.
  • Evaluates the patient for comprehension and ability to cooperate.
  • Utilizes approved methods to improve patient cooperation/relaxation.
  • Educates the patient and/or family on the test procedure, interacting on a level appropriate to the patient's age and mental capacity.
  • Implements alternative methods or adjusts controls to obtain optimal recording. This may include appropriate control setting changes on the machine, use of extra electrodes, extra montages, and use of activation procedures.
  • Recognizes artifacts (patient, instrumental, or environmental).
  • Documents, eliminates, or takes proper measures to monitor the artifact.
  • Attends to patient needs while in the department and ensures patient safety at all times.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate actions to take during emergency situations
  • Ensures electrical safety of patient and staff.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of departmental infection control standards relating to patient, equipment, and electrodes.
  • Complies with department/institution guidelines for handling of infectious/hazardous materials.
  • Keeps equipment clean and in proper working order.
  • Verifies appropriate calibrations and makes adjustments, if necessary.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems and repairs or reports to supervisor promptly.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal communication skills with patients, their families, lab staff, physicians, and other members of the hospital staff.
  • Demonstrates basic computer skills.
  • Reviews studies with REEG Technologists and/or interpreting physician and implements suggestions for quality improvement.
  • Expands knowledge by participation in conferences, in-services, and independent study
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements
Work Experience

A minimum of 6 months' experience in direct patient care setting required

Education

High school diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or higher preferred

Licensure/Certification/Registration

BLS - Certified as a Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider required within 90 days of employment in this position AND

EEG - Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist with the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologist (ABRET) required upon hire
