Job description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Cleveland Health Sciences Library (CHSL) of Case Western Reserve University, seeks to welcome an Education, Instruction, and Outreach Librarian (L2) to our growing team. Responsibilities for this role will include the delivery and expansion of services supporting the educational and research needs of the faculty, students, and staff of the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Dental Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. The Cleveland Health Sciences Library serves a wide variety of stakeholders within a complex library system. This librarian must be flexible and forward thinking in providing emotionally intelligent support, while staying current on new ideas and technologies. The ideal candidate will offer their experience, creativity, ideas, and solutions with a commitment to workplace respect. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Education: Provide one-on-one or group reference and research, via email, in-person and virtual consultations to Case Western Reserve University faculty, students, and staff. Collaborate with Cleveland Health Sciences Library departments to create and provide curricular supporting resources. (45%)
Instruction: Deliver learning theory centered instruction, training, and workshops for stakeholders including, but not limited to database searching, Evidence-Based Practice, bibliographic management software, research strategies, etc. Instruction may be delivered in person, via Zoom, synchronously or asynchronously. (15%)
Outreach: Engage in outreach for special projects or with specific departments. Aid in creating content to support outreach initiatives. (15%)
Contribute to the library through committee service, professional publications or presentations to professional organizations at the local, regional, or national level. (10%)
Contribute to a collaborative, respectful, team-based work culture. (5%)
Maintain proper records and statistics of activities to assess and analyze data for quality improvement. Understand Library systems like Sierra, Interlibrary Loan, Springshare products. (5%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assist with Circulation and Interlibrary Loan. (4%)
Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)

CONTACTS

Department: FREQUENT: collaborations with departmental staff to support the provision of library services. Works under the direction of managers and other units in the library to create educational resources, complete projects, and convey requested information.

University: OCCASIONALLY consult with faculty, faculty committees, and other department administrators to determine teaching and research informational requirements. Consult with other campus librarians to coordinate the provision of library services.

External: OCCASIONALLY participate in local, regional, and national organizations to maintain a network of information professionals to stay abreast of trends and changes in the profession. Collaborate occasionally with colleagues in OhioLINK and other academic campus libraries.

Students: FREQUENT: Daily, ongoing communication with students to support their education and research needs, as appropriate.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position may occasionally supervise nonexempt staff, or student employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

The initial rank of the Education, Instruction, and Outreach Librarian will be based upon the qualifications of the individual regarding that person's: professional experience and knowledge, abilities and skills; contributions to the profession through service and scholarly endeavors; and professional qualities consistent with university and library values.

Experience: 1-3 years of professional experience in a library providing reference services and creating and presenting individualized information literacy instruction to various sizes of groups. Preference will be given to those with experience in a health sciences library.

Education: Master's degree in library and/or information science is required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Experience with database searching. Experience in performing reference services.
Knowledge of evidence synthesis, methodologies, and tools.
Knowledge of the academic library environment and academic output.
Familiarity with Zoom, Microsoft products, Sierra/Alma, citation management tools, Adobe Acrobat, ILLiad, OCLC, etc.
Experience using Springshare or similar products to support curricular and research activities.
Minimum experience with planning and providing instruction and research support; knowledge of adult learning best practices; using techniques and technology to innovate.
Experience creating marketing materials; participating in marketing activities.
Able to collaborate and partner effectively; perform or administer slightly complex or specialized duties; communicate effectively.
Effective customer service skills: ability to work within a team in a collaborative environment grow cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Ability to manage assignments and ensure assigned tasks are implemented and completed accurately within an established timeframe to meet department goals and outcomes.
Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face-to-face, via Zoom or other web-based platforms, by email, and on the phone.
Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
Evidence of professional contributions; keeps abreast of trends for libraries in higher education.
Ability to meet consistent attendance.

PREFERRED SKILLS

Experience searching health sciences databases, performing health sciences focused reference services, understanding of evidence-based practice, health sciences research and study design.
Familiarity with the principles of academic output, Open Access, and research impact.
Familiarity with research data management, the data life cycle, and FAIR principles.
Experience using Drupal or managing web content.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General library/office working conditions. May occasionally need to move book trucks weighing up to 50 lbs. Occasional work hours outside the normal hours to accommodate educational needs of faculty, staff, and students. Opportunities to participate in continuing educational opportunities outside of the university.
