Job description

Reuters is looking for an ambitious Editor for our fast-paced, round-the-clock Global News Desk. Expect to work alongside award-winning journalists in a global news organisation long recognised for its commitment to accuracy and fairness. Play a role helping us evolve digitally to stand out from the crowd for everything from business to world events.

The role is based in Wellington, New Zealand, as we look to strengthen our editing team and support our existing bureau.

We're seeking an editor adept at crafting and honing stories that span geographies, industries, and markets; from scoops and breaking news to analyses and insights. The position requires understanding the needs of Reuters' diverse audience, which includes financial and professional clients, major media organisations, digital publishers, and general news consumers.

This role involves experimenting with new story formats and tools, working as a copy editor, and packaging content across various media including video, pictures, graphics, audio, and text. Sharp headlines, ledes, and nut paragraphs are essential. The ability to identify gaps in the story file and collaborate with news editors to fill them is also crucial. Familiarity with generative AI and other technological tools, in line with Reuters’ Trust Principles, is a strong advantage.

The ideal candidate writes with precision and can convey complex ideas for both specialist and general audiences, while maintaining Reuters' high standards for accuracy, brevity, clarity, fair comment, impartiality, and sourcing. Responsibilities include handling copy from the Americas region, particularly the United States; interest and experience in U.S. news are preferred.

Reuters' news reaches over a billion people daily. We seek an editor capable of working with reporters globally to produce distinctive journalism in compelling formats. Join us to help tell the world's most important stories.

About the Role

As Editor, Global News Desk, you will:

  1. Write and edit breaking news stories globally, producing clear, engaging stories quickly.
  2. Edit longer initiative stories for a global audience that may take several days to develop.
  3. Ensure each story is balanced, includes fair comment, and features engaging visuals.
  4. Collaborate with international colleagues.
  5. Drive innovation in news production and storytelling techniques.
About You

You’re a suitable candidate if you:

  • Have proven experience as a reporter or production editor, preferably in business or finance but not mandatory.
  • Can write accurately and rapidly, with strong copy-editing skills, including handling complex, sensitive stories.
  • Possess digital and multimedia expertise, familiar with SEO, story optimization, and analytics.
  • Can cover topics for diverse audiences.
  • Have good news judgment, ask insightful questions, and challenge assumptions.
  • Remain calm under pressure and make quick, sound decisions.
  • Have excellent communication skills, a team-oriented attitude, diplomacy, and collaboration skills.
  • Experience editing newsletters is a plus.
