Job summary

WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV, is seeking a patient care assistant to support nursing and medical staff in the Emergency Department. You will perform direct and indirect care under supervision, assist with admissions, discharges, and routine procedures, and help maintain patient comfort and safety.

The role requires a High School Diploma, BLS within 30 days, and preferably two years of related ED experience or college coursework.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire date.
• Two years of college in nursing/biology/physical therapy/sports medicine or related field OR two years’ ED/pre-hospital experience.
• Preferred: WV EMT/Paramedic licensure or applicable state licensure, ACLS, PALS.

Responsibilities

• Observes and reports patient concerns/changes in condition to a registered nurse immediately.
• Assists the RN with admission, transfer, discharge and general patient care duties.
• Records vital signs and assists with hygiene and comfort; tracks intake/output.
• Performs tests such as glucose monitoring and specimen collection as assigned.
• Maintains a clean, safe environment to prevent infections and ensure safety.
• Transports specimens to the Lab and assists with routine venipuncture if credentialed.
• Communicates nutrition issues to RN and supports department operations.

Education
