Job summary

Rockingham County Schools is seeking an EC Language Facilitator for Rockingham County Middle in Reidsville, North Carolina. The role provides communication support and language enrichment for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, assisting with interaction among students, peers, teachers and staff.

The facilitator helps with transliterating and interpreting, supports IEP goals under teacher direction, and assists in classroom activities while maintaining collaboration with the educational

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate Degree or two years of college (48 semester hours) preferred.
  • Completion of at least one course in sign language and/or cued speech or equivalent.
  • Demonstration of basic signing or cued speech skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate communication between the student and peers or adults in the school environment.
  • Study content of lessons to ensure accurate representation for students.
  • Implement IEP goals under teacher direction.
  • Provide transliterating/interpreting support and tutoring as needed.

EC Language Facilitator

NATURE OF WORK
  • The EC Language Facilitator provides communication support services and language enhancement enrichment to children with hearing loss.
  • He/she facilitates communication among children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other school personnel.
  • Duties may include transliterating fort interpreting fort and/or tutoring students who are deaf or hard of hearing in the classroom and at school-related activities.
  • Daily directions are provided by the regular classroom teacher and the teacher of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.The employee consults with the teacher when problems arise. Errors can seriously impair the progress of students' learning. Limited supervision is provided.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
  • Facilitates communication between the student and his/her peers and/or adults in the school environment.
  • Studies the content of the lessons prior to the class to ensure accuraterepresentation of the lessons.
  • Monitors comprehension
  • Implement IEP goals under teacher direction.
  • Oversee daily maintenance of and use of assistive devices.
  • Tutors students who are deaf or hard of hearing under the direction of the teacher( s).
  • Provides feedback to teachers upon request.
  • Serves as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment.
  • Provides some transliterating and interpreting for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Provides general classroom support when not facilitating communication. I.e., he/she may provide assistance to students with special needs as directed by the special education and/or classroom teachers and may participate in meetings as a member of the educational team. This general assistance must not interfere with the primary responsibility to the children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Studies the content of lessons before they are presented by the teacher.
  • Tutors students according to directions given by the teacher.
  • Provides feedback to the teachers related to the behavior of and comprehension by the students.
  • Facilitates communication between the student and his/her peers and/or adults in the school environment.
  • Serves as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships between hearing-impaired students, school personnel, and other students.
  • Custodial Care
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate Degree or two years of college (48 semester hours)
  • Completion of at least one course in sign language and/or cued speech or equivalent
  • Demonstration of basic signing skills and/or cued speech skills
  • Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing preferred
  • Working knowledge of the nature of deafness and its effect on language development.
  • Ability to work as a team member with other staff members.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Level of proficiency of facilitation will be determined through an informal assessment of sign language knowledge, cued speech knowledge, and/or fluency of facilitation. This informal assessment will be conducted by the lead teacher of the hearing impaired/deaf or another teacher who is competent in sign language, cued speech, and/or language facilitation.

Level of ability will be matched with the appropriate student(s) based on student(s)'s language needs.

Supervision and feedback are provided.

Must be willing to obtain bus driver's license
