Job summary

Kansas City, Kansas Public Library seeks an Adult Services Supervisor to lead staff, coordinate programs, and drive outreach for the community. You will manage daily operations and ensure exceptional service at the branch level.

The role requires MLS or active MLS enrollment, strong communication and tech skills, and the ability to work evenings and weekends. Background check and transportation for outreach are required.

Qualifications

• MLS degree, or current enrollment in an MLS program with anticipated completion within one year of hire.
• Minimum of two years of progressive library experience preferred.
• Strong understanding of library services, values, and operations.
• Ability to supervise, support, and motivate staff effectively.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
• Advanced computer competency, including proficiency in internet use, email, Microsoft Office, multimedia, and databases.
• Must pass a background check according to library standards.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
• Must provide own transportation for outreach or off-site responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day department operations and ensure high-quality customer service.
• Plan, schedule, and assign work to meet department and library goals.
• Hire, supervise, and set performance expectations for department staff.
• Provide ongoing training, support, and motivation for employee growth and development.
• Review and adjust workflow and procedures to improve departmental efficiency.
• Recommend policy changes or updates to the Branch Manager as needed.
• Monitor departmental budget and ensure expenditures align with system guidelines.
• Compile reports and statistics as requested.
• Address patron concerns regarding accounts or services.
• Participate in collection development by recommending materials based on community interest.
• Coordinate with other Adult Services and Youth Services Supervisors to develop library initiatives and partnerships.
• Lead the branch programming plan and ensure implementation of community-relevant programs.
• Represent the library in the community and build relationships with local agencies and organizations.
