Job summary

GTS is seeking a Drop Bury Technician to install and maintain low-voltage fiber optic or coaxial cables buried underground at residential, business, and commercial sites. You will operate utility locators, read blueprints, and perform trenching, duct work, and cable pulling with attention to safety and quality.

You must work with teams outdoors in varying weather, ensuring lawns and landscapes are restored after work and following all regulations and safety procedures.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience preferred in utility locating and trenching, especially near live utilities.
• Ability to read and interpret maps, blueprints, and design prints.

Responsibilities

• Operate GTS utility locator and place paint lines or flags for utility lines to ensure safe trenching.
• Read job layout including valves and meters that may be located.
• Operate trenching equipment, duct work laying, cable pulling, and boring for driveways/sidewalks.
• Maintain bore logs.
• Read blueprints and organize materials and resources for excavation, using basic hand tools.
• Restore customer lawns, sidewalks, and landscaping to original condition.
• Other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Drop Bury Technician duties include installation and maintenance of low-voltage broadband fiber optic cables, or coaxial cables buried underground in residential, business, and commercial job sites.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Operating GTS utility locator and place paint lines, or place flags of utility lines including electrical, fiber optic, gas, water, and sewer lines to ensure safe trenching activities.
• Read the job layout including valves and meters that may or may not have been located.
• Operating trenching equipment, duct work laying, cable pulling, and completing driveway and sidewalk boring.
• Maintain bore logs
• Read blueprints organization of materials and other resources as necessary to complete excavation requirements, which may include the use of basic hand tools
• Restore customer lawns, sidewalks, landscaping back to original conditions to maintain effective working relationships with those affected.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education

• High school diploma or G.E.D.

Experience (preferred, not required)

• Utility Locating
• Drill/bore in both standard and high-risk areas, such as areas with live utilities.
• Operate trenching equipment or use hand tool to trench or bore cable lines.
• Listen to and implement directions
• Knowledge of:
  • Highway traffic control standards
  • Operation and maintenance of all equipment
  • Health and safety regulations, practices and procedures
  • Reading and interpreting Fiber maps and/or CATV design prints

Technical Skills

• Use the tools required for maintaining and servicing machinery

Physical Requirements

• Must be in good physical condition with the ability to stoop, crawl, bend at the knees and waist, squat and lift 60-70 pounds including body weight, equipment, tools and boxes
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time on varied surfaces
• Position requires working outdoors in all types of weather and in the near proximity to vehicular traffic
• May be required to work long or unpredictable hours
• Exposure to varying temperatures as work is primarily outside.
• Noise levels are moderate to heavy.
• Work in different types of terrain including water, sand, and dirt.
• Varying degrees of light as work may begin early morning and continue in the evenings and overnight.

GTS also provides three (3) paid personal days per year, usable after 30-days of employment.
