Job summary

Estes Express in Kansas City is seeking a driver trainee to safely maneuver tractors and trailers in the yard and loading areas, using forklifts or pallet jacks as needed. You will learn to cube, load, strap, and secure freight, document freight condition, perform pre/post shift inspections, and prepare trailers for loading while adhering to FMCSA rules.

This role requires a high school diploma or GED, being 21+, a valid driver's license, and the ability to lift 70 lbs; training to obtain a CDL

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education/experience.
• Must be able to participate in driver trainee program.
• Must be 21 years of age or older per FMCSA regulations.
• Clean MVR with no disqualifying offenses.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and be willing to obtain a CDL Learner’s permit when accepted.
• FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse compliance.
• Must reside within 75 miles of the service center or work assignment.
• Must meet minimum physical qualifications for a driver position.
• Ability to operate a forklift (min 7,500 lb).
• Able to lift approx. 70 lbs. or more.

Responsibilities

• Safely handle and maneuver tractors, trailers, and other equipment.
• Cube, load, and unload freight using forklift, pallet jack, or by hand.
• Secure freight to prevent damage or shifting.
• Record freight condition upon arrival at service center.
• Perform pre-shift and post-shift yard and dock inspections.
• Set up, break down, and hook trailers safely.
• Ensure tilt bars on pup trailers before loading freight.
• Raise and lower landing gear.
• Monitor yard for unsafe drivers and non-employees; report to management.
• Work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Report maintenance problems promptly.
• Contribute to dock/jockey activities and track time in Kronos.
