Job summary

The Ohio Department of Public Safety—Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Driver Exam Services in District 3 North Canton—invites applications for a Driver License Examiner 1 in Canton, OH. You will perform road tests, educate applicants on driving maneuvers, and assess driving ability while entering scores and information into state systems. The position is full-time with a Tuesday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

schedule and Saturday 8:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m. hours.

Qualifications

  • Formal education in arithmetic including fractions, decimals & percentages; reading, writing & speaking English.
  • 1 course or 3 months experience in human/public relations; valid Ohio Class 'D' Driver License.
  • Must be 21 years of age per Section 4507.05(A)(2)(B).

Responsibilities

  • Conducts examination of applicants for vehicle operator's license by accompanying applicant during road test.
  • Instructs applicant in maneuvers to be performed during testing.
  • Administers driving tests for various license classes and endorsements and evaluates applicant's ability to drive.
  • Enter applicant information into BMV systems and administer knowledge tests.

What You'll Do as a Driver License Examiner 1:

  • Conducts examination of applicants for vehicle operator's license by means of physically accompanying applicant in vehicle during road testing over a prescribed course;
  • Instructs applicant in maneuvers to be performed during testing;
  • Administers driving tests to applicants for class D license, motorcycle license, moped license, restricted license & other exams as required by the BMV;
  • Evaluates & grades applicant's ability to drive;
  • Utilize BMV computer systems to enter applicant information (e. g., name, date of birth, social security number, medical information, out of state driver license information, test scores, test appointments, etc.) & to administer knowledge tests for various license classes (e.g., Class D, moped & CDL - Class A, B, C) & endorsements (e.g., motorcycle, passenger, school bus, hazmat, doubles & triples, etc.);

Qualifications

Supplemental InformationTRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT:Must maintain valid Ohio Class 'D' Driver License. Successful completion of agency driving training course required before end of probationary period.

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Required to ride in automobiles with inexperienced drivers; exposed to dust, dirt & exhaust fumes; exposed to weather conditions when working outside; required to travel from one examination facility to another as assigned; must provide own transportation; may be required to work flexible hours.

Background Information:

  • A BCI/FBI fingerprint check, and background check, may be required on all selected applicants.
  • A comparative analysis and/or drug-test may be a requirement of the hiring process.
  • This position is identified as safety sensitive and is subject to random drug & alcohol testing in accordance with DPS 501.24.
