Job summary

City of Virginia Beach is seeking a Motor Equipment Operator I / Deckhand in the Public Works department to perform dredge operations tasks and deckhand duties on vessels. Responsibilities include handling lines, maintaining pipelines, and assisting with navigational aids.

The role requires a high school education (10th grade) and experience with motor equipment; CDL is preferred but not required. The position is alpha I and may require overtime during emergencies.

Qualifications

• Requires completion of tenth (10th) grade and one year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Must have a current and valid driver’s license. CDL preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Connect and disconnect dredge pipelines as needed.
• Assist with winch cable installation and moving dredge equipment.
• Assist with cleaning debris and resolving pipeline blockages.
• Assist with placing, removing, and burying the pipeline.
• Assist with Navigational Aid inventory and maintenance.
• Perform deckhand duties on all vessels, including handling lines and cables and assisting with towing and docking.
