Job summary

Merck & Co., Inc. is seeking an Associate Principal Scientist to join DSCS Digital Technologies, focusing on mechanistic downstream modeling for preparative chromatography in a multi-modality pipeline.

You will collaborate with DSP scientists and process engineers to translate model outputs into purification decisions. Responsibilities include leading end-to-end modeling projects, mentoring junior staff, and defining standards to scale mechanistic simulations across the portfolio.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related with 3+ years industrial/pharma experience.
• MS in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related with 5+ years industrial experience.
• BS in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related with 7+ years industrial experience.
• Deep grounding in preparative chromatography and transport in porous media.
• Experience building/mechanistic chromatography models in CADET/GoSilico.
• Knowledge of rate models and isotherm formulations.
• Ability to translate model outputs into manufacturing decisions.

Responsibilities

• Build, calibrate, and validate mechanistic chromatography models.
• Design isotherm and mass-transfer studies for calibration.
• Apply models to guide resin/mode selection and gradient design.
• Extend modeling to downstream unit operations like viral inactivation and UF/DF.
• Own end-to-end modeling project execution and communicate predictions.
• Mentor junior scientists and grow modeling capabilities.
• Shape downstream modeling roadmap and standards.
