Job summary

Merck & Co., Inc. in Rahway, NJ, seeks an Associate Principal Scientist to join the DSCS Process Modeling & Analytics team. You will apply mechanistic modeling to downstream biologics processes, with a focus on preparative chromatography and adjacent unit operations.

The successful candidate will mentor junior scientists, shape the modeling roadmap, and translate model outputs into purification and manufacturing decisions in collaboration with DSP scientists and process engineers.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or closely-related field with 3+ years of industrial/pharma exp.
• M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or closely-related field with 5+ years of exp.
• B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or closely-related field with 7+ years of exp.

Responsibilities

• Build, calibrate, and validate mechanistic chromatography models.
• Design isotherm and mass-transfer studies for calibration datasets.
• Apply models to guide resin/mode selection, gradients and loading strategy.
• Extend modeling to downstream unit operations like viral inactivation kinetics, UF/DF, depth filtration.
• Own end-to-end modeling project execution and communicate predictions and limitations.
• Mentor junior scientists and grow team capabilities.
• Shape the team's downstream modeling roadmap and establish standards.
