Job summary

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development seeks an Enforcement Sergeant to supervise the Weight Enforcement Unit at the Delta facility. You will oversee field operations, enforce state and federal size, weight, permit, and taxation regulations, and guide officers and inspectors.

You will manage schedules, training, records, and investigations, ensuring compliance with DOTD policies and safety of Louisiana’s highways.

Qualifications

About This Position

The DOTD Enforcement Sergeant serves as a commissioned law enforcement supervisor within the Weight Enforcement Unit at an assigned fixed-scale facility. The position is responsible for supervising personnel and ensuring the consistent enforcement of state and federal size, weight, permit, registration, and taxation regulations. The incumbent provides field guidance, oversees investigations and enforcement activities, manages daily operations and personnel assignments, and ensures compliance with DOTD policies, procedures, and required certifications while supporting the safety of Louisiana’s highway system.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Minimum Qualifications

• Four years of law enforcement experience in the protection of transportation infrastructure; OR
• Five years of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer commissioned with the power of arrest.

Necessary Special Requirements

• Possession of a valid driver's license.
• Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.
• An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Duties

• Supervise weight enforcement operations by providing field guidance to police officers and compliance inspectors, assigning duties, monitoring enforcement activities, and ensuring state and federal regulations are applied fairly and consistently.
• Oversee personnel and daily operations by preparing work schedules, briefing staff on policies and procedures, assisting with training, maintaining records, and communicating operational information and directives to subordinate personnel.
• Conduct and oversee investigations and enforcement activities including major events, evidence handling, seizures, criminal and regulatory investigations, and other duties requiring advanced police skills and independent judgment.
• Manage administrative and facility responsibilities by ensuring reports and timekeeping are completed accurately, conducting performance evaluations, maintaining equipment and inventory, coordinating supplies and facility needs, and assisting with emergency or disaster response activities.
