Manager, Transportation will ensure a Transportation department culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagements with drivers, best in-class service to customers, and safe and profitable operations. They will use their experience in transportation operations to manage personnel and drive efficient transportation operations through the associates they lead, ensuring the safe, accurate, and timely daily outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible to participate in a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship position in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Lead with a safety mindset that ensures that every US Foods associate, our customers, and the general public with whom our drivers interact remain injury free, always. Champion safety procedures, processes, and training to create and maintain a safety-first culture in the Transportation department.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and Transportation associates through one-on-one coaching, training on policy and procedures, assisting in problem resolution when required, and leading by example. Ensure all drivers and other Transportation department associates are appropriately trained in job duties as well as safety and legal responsibilities.
  3. Discuss performance with Sr. Transportation Managers and create plans to address gaps in performance.
  4. Create an atmosphere in which upward communication is encouraged, and motivate associates to achieve department goals and objectives.
  5. Direct and supervise the work and productivity of drivers and clerical associates within the Transportation department. Drive associate engagement and retention, and create a culture that embodies US Foods values.
  6. Participate in interviewing and hiring Transportation personnel, review performance, coach on service and safety targets, and deliver disciplinary actions.
  7. Monitor production goals and maintain a zero-error attitude to ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction. Troubleshoot problems with deliveries and implement cost-effective, legal solutions. Ensure team understands and adheres to DOT regulations.
  8. Identify and eliminate waste, and improve processes to complete work more safely and efficiently.
  9. Conduct routine Safety and Driver Meetings and oversee maintenance of driver qualification files.
  10. Investigate all accidents, maintain an accident file, track causes, and take preventative actions.

Other duties include effectively scheduling shifts using planning tools (e.g., Microsoft Excel) and any additional tasks assigned by the manager.

Supervision:

Direct: Union and/or non-union Drivers

Relationships:

Internal: Transportation leaders and coworkers; Drivers; Warehouse leaders; Internal customers across departments (e.g., Sales)

External: Customers

Work Environment:

May spend significant time on the road, in trucks with drivers, exposed to noise and vibration. Also, time in an office working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications

Related Experience/Requirements:

  • Minimum of three years in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • Minimum of one year overseeing a workforce.
  • Experience as a driver is a plus.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Broad knowledge of transportation/delivery operations, methods, and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and people development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT requirements, inventory control, OSHA, and other regulations.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office).
Travel:

10% travel required, mainly for meetings and training.

Education/Training:

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications:

Must perform activities like driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity tasks for specified durations.

Compensation depends on experience, education, skills, location, and other factors. The expected base salary range is $55,000 - $90,000.
