Manager, Transportation

The Manager of Transportation will foster a department culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost. They will engage meaningfully with drivers, ensure best-in-class service to customers, and oversee safe and profitable operations. Using their transportation operations experience, they will manage personnel and drive efficient outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Lead with a safety-first mindset, ensuring injury prevention for associates, customers, and the public. Promote safety procedures, processes, and training to maintain a safety-first culture.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, problem resolution, and leading by example. Ensure all team members are trained in safety and legal responsibilities.
  3. Discuss performance with senior managers and create development plans for team members.
  4. Encourage upward communication and motivate staff to meet department goals.
  5. Supervise work and productivity within the department, fostering engagement and embodying US Foods values.
  6. Participate in hiring, review performance, coach on safety and service, and administer disciplinary actions.
  7. Monitor production goals, ensure accuracy, troubleshoot delivery issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  8. Identify waste, improve processes for safety and efficiency, and conduct safety and driver meetings.
  9. Maintain driver qualification files and investigate accidents to prevent future incidents.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse and sales teams. External: Customers.

Work Environment

Time spent on the road and in trucks, exposed to noise and vibrations. Office work on computers is also required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation, delivery, or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of transportation operations and procedures.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret operational data and basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10%, for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity for specified durations.

Compensation ranges from $55,000 to $90,000 depending on experience, education, skills, location, and legal factors.
