Manager, Transportation

The Manager of Transportation will foster a department culture centered on people, safety, service, and cost efficiency through meaningful engagement with drivers, delivering best-in-class service to customers, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their transportation operations experience to manage personnel and drive efficient outbound shipments, ensuring safety, accuracy, and timeliness in deliveries to customers and distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Lead with a safety mindset to ensure injury-free interactions with associates, customers, and the public; champion safety procedures, processes, and training to foster a safety-first culture.
  2. Oversee and develop drivers and transportation associates through coaching, training, and performance management, ensuring compliance with safety and legal responsibilities.
  3. Promote open communication and motivate team members to meet department goals and objectives.
  4. Supervise work and productivity of drivers and clerical staff, enhancing engagement and retention, and embodying US Foods values.
  5. Participate in hiring and build high-performing teams; review performance, coach, and address disciplinary issues.
  6. Monitor production goals to ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction; troubleshoot delivery issues and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  7. Identify waste and improve processes for safety and efficiency.
  8. Conduct safety and driver meetings and oversee maintenance of driver qualification files.
  9. Investigate accidents, maintain records, analyze causes, and implement preventative measures.
  10. Schedule shifts using planning tools like Microsoft Excel.
  11. Other duties as assigned by the manager.
Supervision

Direct: Union and/or non-union drivers

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, coworkers, drivers, warehouse leaders, other departments (e.g., Sales)

External: Customers

Work Environment

Primarily on the road and in trucks, with exposure to noise and vibration; also in an office setting working on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications

Related Experience/Requirements:

  • At least three years in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year in a supervisory role.
  • Driving experience is a plus.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Understanding of DOT and other regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office).
Travel

Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Able to perform physical activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity tasks for required durations.

Compensation ranges from $55,000 to $90,000, depending on experience, education, skills, location, and other factors.
