Manager, Transportation

The Manager, Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost. They will engage meaningfully with drivers, ensure best-in-class service to customers, and maintain safe and profitable operations. Leveraging their experience in transportation operations, they will manage personnel and drive efficient transportation through their team, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for the DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of active-duty. This is an unpaid, non-benefit position in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Safety Leadership: Promote a safety-first culture, ensuring injury-free interactions among associates, customers, and the public. Champion safety procedures, training, and compliance.
  2. Team Development: Coach and train drivers and transportation associates, ensuring adherence to policies, safety, and legal responsibilities. Discuss performance with senior managers and develop improvement plans.
  3. Communication and Motivation: Foster an environment of open communication, motivate team achievement, and embody US Foods values.
  4. Supervision and Performance Management: Oversee work and productivity, participate in hiring, review performance, coach on safety and service, and manage disciplinary actions.
  5. Operational Oversight: Monitor production goals, troubleshoot delivery issues, ensure compliance with DOT regulations, and improve processes for safety and efficiency.
  6. Safety and Compliance: Conduct safety meetings, oversee maintenance of driver qualification files, and investigate accidents to prevent future incidents.
  7. Scheduling: Plan shifts using appropriate tools like Microsoft Excel.
  8. Other duties: As assigned by the manager.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse, sales, and other departments. External: Customers.

Work Environment

Primarily on the road, spending time in trucks and an office environment, exposed to noise and vibration levels.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year overseeing a workforce.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of transportation operations and procedures.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to analyze operational data.
  • Basic computer skills.
Travel

Approximately 10% for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, lifting, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity for specified durations.

Compensation ranges from $55,000 to $90,000 based on experience, skills, location, and other factors.
