Manager, Transportation

The Manager of Transportation will foster a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost efficiency. They will engage meaningfully with drivers, deliver top-tier service to customers, and ensure safe, profitable operations. Leveraging their transportation operations experience, they will manage personnel and oversee efficient outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers within the organization.

This application is only available to active-duty service members eligible for a DoD SkillBridge Internship. The service member must be within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract. This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship in partnership with the DoD SkillBridge program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Safety Leadership: Promote a safety-first culture, ensuring injury-free interactions with associates, customers, and the public. Champion safety procedures, processes, and training.
  2. Team Development: Coach and train drivers and associates, ensuring compliance with policies, safety, and legal responsibilities. Address performance gaps and foster upward communication.
  3. Supervision and Engagement: Oversee work and productivity, drive engagement and retention, and embody US Foods values.
  4. Hiring and Performance Management: Participate in hiring processes, review performance, coach, and enforce disciplinary actions when necessary.
  5. Operational Oversight: Monitor production goals, ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction, troubleshoot delivery issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  6. Process Improvement: Identify waste, improve safety and efficiency processes.
  7. Safety Meetings and Compliance: Conduct safety meetings, oversee driver qualification files, and investigate accidents to prevent recurrence.
  8. Scheduling: Plan work shifts using planning tools such as Microsoft Excel.
  9. Other duties as assigned.
Supervision

Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.

Relationships

Internal: Transportation leaders, coworkers, drivers, warehouse leaders, internal departments (e.g., Sales).
External: Customers.

Work Environment

Primarily on the road, with exposure to noise and vibration. Time spent in an office on a computer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in transportation, delivery, or warehouse distribution.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of transportation operations and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and development skills.
  • Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and inventory regulations.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Travel

Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings and training.

Education/Training

High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Physical Qualifications

Ability to perform activities such as driving, pushing/pulling, climbing, grasping, manipulating objects, and manual dexterity tasks.

Compensation ranges from $55,000 to $90,000, depending on experience, skills, location, and other factors.
