Job Description Position Summary: The Documentation Specialist - Technical Writer will support the US Army Environmental Command (USAEC) Operations Branch at Joint Base San Antonio, TX. They will support USAEC business practices and management tasks by documenting standard operating procedures (SOPs) and processes to ensure consistency and accuracy in day-to-day operations. Full consideration date is 22 October 2026.

Essential Job Duties

Serves as a technical expert in documentation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and processes to ensure consistency and accuracy in day-to-day operations. Works within the command to develop continuity documents for specific positions. Converts complex technical processes, workflows, and data into clear, accurate, and well-structured SOPs, continuity documents, and operational guides that ensure consistency across mission activities. Collaborates with SMEs and process owners to gather detailed information and produce maintainable documentation using technical writing best practices, supporting readiness, knowledge transfer, and day-to-day operational accuracy.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires).
  • Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • Must be able to comply with all applicable regulations to obtain a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC) and public trust clearance; required at a minimum to complete a NACI/SF85 and successfully pass a federal background check.

Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. in Computer Science or related degree.
  • At least three (3) years' experience in technical writing in the last five (5) years.
  • Demonstrated experience understanding complex business management processes and developing clear, accurate, and easy-to-read SOPs.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining documentation, versioning, facilitating knowledge transfer, and accurately documenting processes.
  • Experience determining customer needs and collaborating with users to identify and develop the most effective end product to meet customer needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters in Computer Science or a related degree.
  • Strong ability to translate complex workflows into clear, concise, and sequential steps with visual aids or screenshots.
  • Experience interviewing team members to map out processes that accurately cover real-world operational use cases.

Salary Range 75000-105000
