Job ID JR101572 Date posted 12/16/2024

The Director of the Accelerator Facilities Division (AFD) will be part of the AS&T Department leadership team and will play an integral role in supporting strategic initiatives in the Discovery Technologies Directorate and BNL more broadly. Because of the ATF's special role as a National User Facility, the AFD Director will also serve as the Director of the ATF to steward its unique science and technology user program. The AFD Director will directly support the Chair of the Accelerator Science and Technology (AS&T) Department to provide scientific and technical leadership of major research programs across the department, with a focus on successful implementation and execution of scientific and technical strategy for AFD. In addition to stewarding the ATF, this will include oversight of the LEAD Facility and BeamNetUS teams, and the pursuit of new AS&T opportunities as they arise across DOE, other government agencies, and industry. Other responsibilities include oversight of the management systems, operations, safety, compliance, and performance assessments across the division, which operates under a rigorous Conduct of Operations program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the research and operations program for all facilities and capabilities provided by the Accelerator Facilities Division.
  • Serve as ATF Director and coordinate closely with the DOE Office of Science sponsor. Work with DOE, other agencies, the advanced accelerator and laser user communities, and all stakeholders of the ATF to further its science and technology research mission.
  • Support the AS&T Department Chair in development of strategic plans for the department and division.
  • Develop and implement plans for the division that grow capabilities essential to the accelerator and laser research community, that advance accelerator and laser science and technology, and that enable deployment of advanced accelerator and laser technologies.
  • Implement workforce training engagements that help deliver science and technology expertise vital to the nation's future needs.
  • Attract, retain, and foster the development of a team of talented and innovative accelerator and laser experts to deliver a unique science and technology research program.
  • Maintain BNL's strong international reputation for accelerator user facilities and innovation to enable ground-breaking fundamental science supporting the DOE Science mission.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A PhD in physics or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of experience with research in advanced technologies such as lasers and particle accelerators.
  • At least 6 (six) years of management and leadership experience with complex and multidisciplinary research programs.
  • A record of significant scientific and/or technical contributions in accelerator or laser fields.
  • Experience working in a DOE facility, NSF facility, international user facility, or major industrial research environment.
  • Experience communicating with key stakeholders, clients, program sponsors, and internal staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully developing, implementing, and executing scientific strategy with engagement from critical stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collegial relationships and collaborate with all levels of staff within the Laboratory including Senior Leadership.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated expertise through having an internationally recognized research program that overlaps some of the AFD core technologies and research directions.
  • Experience with DOE Accelerator Safety and Conduct of Operations requirements.

Other Information:

  • Moderate domestic and foreign travel
  • Pursuit of a DOE "Q" security clearance may be desirable.
