Job description

The Department of Pathology, Division of Anatomic Pathology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, invites applications for the position of Division Chief of Anatomic Pathology. This is offered at open rank, tenure track optional, commensurate with qualifications. The Chief of Anatomic Pathology serves on the Leadership Committee of the Department of Pathology and will interface with the leadership at the University of Virginia Medical Laboratory and Medical Center.

Responsibilities will involve directing and maintaining oversight of the clinical activities, quality initiatives, and faculty academic progress in Anatomic Pathology including Autopsy Services, Cytopathology, Dermatopathology, Hematopathology, Surgical Pathology, Neuropathology, Renal Pathology as well as the ancillary testing offered in the division such as immunohistochemistry and fluorescent in situ hybridization. This person will establish an effective working relationship with the Medical Staff, Hospital Administration and other Departments regarding the Anatomic Pathology operations. The Division Chief will assist the Chair in carrying out the policies for the daily operation and quality of the Anatomic Pathology services including responsibility for meeting CAP accreditation, participating in root cause analysis and quality projects, and ensuring faculty and laboratory proficiency.

The Chief will ensure excellence in teaching of medical students, residents and fellows, and will interact directly with the Department’s ACGME-accredited Residency and ACGME-accredited and nonaccredited Fellowships Program Directors. The Chief will assist ongoing basic and translational research in the areas of expertise of the faculty and trainees, and collaborate with colleagues from other departments corresponding with subspecialty interests.

The Department of Pathology is staffed by 30 clinical faculty, 35 residents and fellows in anatomic and clinical pathology. The specialty diagnostic subservices include autopsy pathology, cytopathology, dermatopathology, general surgical pathology, hematopathology, neuropathology and neuromuscular pathology, ocular pathology, and renal pathology. The AP services perform approximately 40,000 surgical cases, 17,000 cytology specimens, and approximately 100 autopsies per year. The environment provides excellent opportunities for clinical and translation research as well as collaborations with investigators in the School of Medicine and University campus.

Candidates must have an MD or DO degree or equivalent, be board-certified in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and be eligible for licensure in the State of Virginia. Fellowship training and/or experience in general surgical pathology and/or a subspecialty area of surgical pathology is encouraged.

Experience: Fellowship training and/or experience in general surgical pathology and/or a subspecialty area of surgical pathology is encouraged.

Licensure: Candidates must be board-certified in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and be eligible for licensure in the State of Virginia.
