Job summary

The City of Austin is seeking an Apprentice Lineworker to participate in the Austin Energy Apprenticeship Program. Trainees will help with transmission, network, or distribution tasks under direct supervision and gain hands-on experience climbing poles and operating specialized equipment.

As part of the program, individuals will attend classroom instruction, document progression, and support various crews in maintenance and construction activities.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
• Valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 120 days.
• Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening may be required.
• Ability to lift, carry, and manipulate equipment and supplies weighing more than 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Participates in On-the-Job Training (OJT) and classroom instruction, documents progression in the Apprenticeship Program.
• Climbs utility poles and structures, uses tools, and drives electric utility vehicles to assist with outage response and maintenance.
• Assists with preparing equipment, tools, materials, cables, and conductors for use on transmission, network, or distribution systems.
• Assists with inventory of vehicles and equipment.
• Performs inspections on electric utility vehicles and responds to on-call outages and emergencies.
• Assists with installation, construction, and maintenance of structures and equipment on AE’s systems.
• Operates aerial equipment and other heavy equipment as needed.
