Job summary

TelemetryX is seeking a Director of Engineering for Telematics Hardware and Embedded Software in Irvine, CA to lead the design, development, and lifecycle management of telematics devices.

You will manage hardware and embedded firmware teams, coordinate with product and manufacturing partners, define system architecture, ensure quality and security, and drive scalable, cost-effective device platforms for connected equipment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering; master’s preferred (or related field).
• 10+ years in embedded systems and hardware development.
• 5+ years leading engineering teams.
• Experience with connected devices and telematics systems.
• Experience with wireless technologies (LTE, LTE-M, NB-IoT, WiFi, Bluetooth).
• Experience bringing hardware products from concept to production.
• Experience working with contract manufacturers.
• Designing ruggedized or automotive-grade electronics.
• Familiarity with GPS/GNSS and CAN/OBD/J1939 interfaces.
• Knowledge of OTA updates and device security architecture.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of telematics hardware and embedded software platforms.
• Oversee full product lifecycle from concept to production and field deployment.
• Manage contract manufacturers, suppliers, and logistics partners.
• Establish engineering processes for design reviews, testing, and release management.
• Define system architecture for telematics devices including communications and security.
• Oversee device certification efforts (FCC, carrier approvals) and environmental compliance.
• Mentor multidisciplinary teams across hardware, firmware, and systems engineering.
• Collaborate with operations and supply chain on cost targets and lifecycle risk.
• Translate market requirements into technical specs and roadmaps.
• Support deployments with technical troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
