Axonic Insurance, a NYC-based insurance business, is seeking a Director, Statutory & Technical Accounting to lead all aspects of statutory (STAT) and GAAP technical accounting across our annuity business. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role serves as AXI’s authoritative expert on SSAP, NAIC Blue Book reporting, asset admissibility, reinsurance accounting, and the technical accounting considerations required for complex corporate transactions.

The ideal candidate brings deep life/annuity insurance experience, a strong command of statutory and GAAP frameworks, and the ability to translate complex accounting guidance into clear recommendations for senior leadership. This is a high-impact role that directly supports financial reporting integrity, capital planning, regulatory compliance, and AXI’s growth strategy.

Ideal location: New York City; will consider remote work location for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities
Statutory Accounting & Blue Book Expertise
  • Lead AXI’s statutory reporting framework, including preparation, review, and interpretation of Blue Book schedules and related disclosures.
  • Research and resolve complex SSAP questions; prepare clear, well-supported technical accounting positions for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitor NAIC updates, SSAP revisions, RBC guidance, and regulatory developments; assess company impact and advise leadership proactively.
  • Support interactions with state insurance regulators, examiners, and auditors related to statutory accounting and reporting matters.
  • Serve as AXI’s technical accounting expert for reinsurance structures (coinsurance, modified coinsurance, funds-withheld, and other complex arrangements).
  • Evaluate the statutory and GAAP implications of proposed reinsurance treaties and capital transactions and advise on optimal structuring.
  • Identify embedded derivative or experience refund considerations and their impacts under both GAAP and STAT frameworks.
  • Support Product, Actuarial, Investments, and Reinsurance teams in designing transaction structures that align with accounting, regulatory, and capital objectives.
Asset Admissibility & Investment Accounting
  • Assess asset admissibility under SSAP, including structured investments, private credit, Schedule BA assets, collateral requirements, and other nonadmitted considerations.
  • Advise on surplus impacts, RBC treatment, and statutory reporting implications of various investment strategies.
  • Partner with Treasury and Investments to ensure proper classification, valuation, and reporting of investment holdings.
Technical Accounting Policy & GAAP
  • Lead development and maintenance of AXI’s accounting policy framework across STAT and GAAP.
  • Provide technical guidance on GAAP accounting topics, including LDTI, DAC, reinsurance accounting, and complex product or investment structures.
  • Draft technical memos, issue analyses, and documentation to support internal controls, audit readiness, and regulatory submissions.
Cross-Functional Leadership & Governance
  • Partner with Finance, Actuarial, Product, Operations, Investments, Legal, and senior leadership to ensure aligned and compliant accounting practices.
  • Strengthen financial reporting controls and enhance documentation and governance processes.
  • Support capital planning, financial modeling, and strategic initiatives with technical accounting insights and scenario analysis.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA required.
  • 10+ years of technical accounting experience at a life/annuity insurance carrier, reinsurer, or Big Four/public accounting firm (insurance-focused).
  • Deep expertise in SSAP, NAIC Blue Book reporting, RBC, and statutory accounting for life/annuity products.
  • Significant experience with reinsurance accounting, including coinsurance, mod-co, and funds-withheld structures.
  • Strong knowledge of asset admissibility rules and investment accounting under SSAP.
  • Proven experience advising on transaction structuring, including evaluating financial, accounting, and capital implications.
  • Strong command of GAAP accounting principles affecting annuity products, including LDTI.
  • Proven ability to write clear, defensible technical accounting memos and communicate complex guidance to non-accountants.
  • Experience leading discussions with auditors and regulators.
  • High judgment, analytical rigor, and the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment.
