Axonic Insurance, a NYC-based insurance business, is seeking a Manager, Data Governance & Information Management to lead enterprise data governance, classification, retention, and access management across the organization. This role is responsible for establishing the frameworks, standards, and controls that ensure company data is organized, secure, compliant, and accessible to support business operations and strategic decision-making.
The Manager will partner closely with Operations, Technology, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Actuarial, and business leaders to develop scalable governance practices, strengthen data controls, and support the organization's long-term data strategy. During the first year, the primary focus will be establishing enterprise-wide governance for unstructured data, implementing role-based access controls, and creating sustainable data classification and retention frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
Data Governance & Information Management
- Establish and maintain enterprise data governance standards, taxonomy, metadata, classification, and retention frameworks.
- Lead enterprise data inventory, classification, and organization initiatives across structured and unstructured data environments.
- Develop and maintain data dictionaries, lineage documentation, governance policies, and operating procedures.
- Ensure consistent data management practices across business functions and systems.
Data Retention, Compliance & Access Governance
- Administer enterprise data retention and records management programs in accordance with regulatory and business requirements.
- Partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Information Security teams to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, including privacy and records management obligations.
- Design and oversee role-based access control (RBAC) frameworks, user access governance processes, and privileged access standards.
- Support audits, regulatory examinations, and compliance reviews related to data governance and information management.
Enterprise Data Operations & Strategy
- Oversee the organization, accessibility, and lifecycle management of enterprise data repositories.
- Partner with Technology teams to improve data architecture, storage management, governance tooling, and automation capabilities.
- Develop reporting and metrics to monitor data quality, governance effectiveness, retention compliance, and access controls.
- Identify risks, gaps, and opportunities to improve data governance, operational efficiency, and regulatory readiness.
- Serve as the organization's subject matter expert on data governance, classification, retention, and access management practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience in data governance, data management, records management, information architecture, or related disciplines.
- Experience within the insurance or financial services industry, preferably Life & Annuity.
- Strong knowledge of data governance, records retention, information lifecycle management, and access control frameworks.
- Experience implementing enterprise taxonomy, metadata, classification, or governance programs.
- Knowledge of cloud-based storage environments, enterprise content management platforms, and data governance tools.
- Strong project management, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience supporting regulatory audits, examinations, or compliance initiatives preferred.
- CDMP, CIP, CRM, DAMA, or similar certifications preferred.
