Job summary

GRTC is seeking a Director of Transportation to lead its largest department, overseeing fixed-route, BRT, paratransit, and microtransit. You will shape policies, ensure safety and reliability, and coordinate across Maintenance, Safety & Security, Planning, and Customer Service. Strong labor relations and budget oversight are essential.

The role reports to the COO and drives modernization, operational excellence, and equitable rider experiences across all modes in the Richmond region.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Transportation Management or related field is required.
• Minimum seven years transit operations experience with five in leadership.
• Experience with labor relations and collective bargaining.
• Experience with multiple transit modes (fixed route, paratransit, microtransit) preferred.

Responsibilities

• Directs Transportation Department, ensuring service reliability, safety, and customer satisfaction.
• Oversees 300+ bus operators and supervision staff across multiple modes.
• Leads labor relations, union negotiations, and contract oversight.
• Manages contracts, budgeting, and coordination with Maintenance, Safety, Planning, and Customer Service.
