POSITION: Director of Transportation LOCATION: Transportation Department AVAILABLE: August 1, 2025 (exact date TBD) COMPENSATION: Salary in accordance with Act 93 Agreement
Minimum/Maximum: $89,068/$133,602 DESCRIPTION: The Director of Transportation is responsible for overseeing and managing the safe and efficient transportation of students within Central Bucks School District. This role involves coordinating the daily operations of the Transportation Department, ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, maintaining a fleet of school buses and other vehicles, and directing the same through the use of contracted carriers. The Director of Transportation will work closely with school administrators, staff, and parents to ensure that students are transported safely and on time.
Fleet Management
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (List is not all-inclusive)
- Maintain and manage the school district's fleet of buses, vans, and other transportation vehicles.
- Oversee the scheduling of regular maintenance, inspections, and repairs to ensure the safety and reliability of vehicles.
- Manage the acquisition of new vehicles and the disposal of older ones, in accordance with budget constraints.
Route Planning And Scheduling
- Manage the development and optimization of bus routes to ensure efficient and timely transportation of students.
- Supervise the coordination the scheduling of routes, bus stops, and driver assignments.
- Oversee the adjustment of routes as needed to accommodate changes in student enrollment or transportation needs.
- Work with contracted carrier to ensure district & contract expectations are met and proper adherence by both parties to the contract.
Staff Supervision And Training
- Recruit, hire, and train transportation department staff, including bus drivers, mechanics, and administrative personnel.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide feedback to staff members.
- Develop and implement ongoing training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of transportation staff.
- Ensure Drivers and Aides who interact with students are properly trained in behavior management techniques as per district guidelines.
- Supervise the progressive discipline process when department employees violate district policies/procedures, or any other applicable law.
Safety And Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to school transportation.
- Implement safety policies and procedures to protect students, drivers, and passengers.
- Investigate and report accidents or incidents involving school transportation.
Budget Management
- Develop and manage the transportation department budget, including forecasting expenses, monitoring expenditures, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
- Prepare and present budget reports to school district leadership.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement:
- Collaborate with school principals, administrators, and contracted carriers to address transportation-related concerns and issues.
- Maintain open and effective communication channels with parents and guardians regarding transportation services.
- Attend school board meetings as needed to provide transportation updates and recommendations.
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in business administration, transportation management, or a related field (Experience in lieu of degree is acceptable). Previous experience in school transportation management, including supervisory roles. Knowledge of federal, state, and local transportation regulations and compliance requirements. Strong organizational and leadership skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in transportation management software and technology. Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements. Must be courteous and able to deal effectively with people, able to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
Physical Requirements are ability to lift up to 25 pounds; physical ability to inspect buses and other vehicles; and the ability to work in an office setting as well as in the field.
