Job Summary

The Director of Operations is responsible for the overall operational performance of the division, including field operations, service, installation, production/fabrication, warehouse, logistics, and other operational functions as applicable. This role leads Operations Managers and frontline leaders while driving accountability for safety, financial performance, customer service, productivity, and operational execution.

The Director establishes operating discipline through standardized processes, performance metrics, workforce planning, and continuous improvement while partnering with Sales, Project Management, Finance, Safety, and other functional leaders to achieve business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Execution

• Lead division operations and develop Operations Managers, Supervisors, and frontline leaders.
• Establish clear expectations, accountability, and consistent operating routines.
• Ensure labor, equipment, materials, and resources are effectively planned and deployed.
• Identify operational constraints, capacity issues, and execution risks and implement corrective actions.
• Drive consistent execution of company policies, procedures, SOPs, and work rules.

Financial, KPI & Productivity Management

• Partner with division leadership and Finance to achieve revenue, gross margin, labor, expense, and profitability objectives.
• Manage operational KPIs including labor utilization, overtime, revenue per technician, backlog conversion, schedule performance, productivity, and operational gross margin.
• Analyze performance trends, establish corrective actions, and identify opportunities to improve productivity and reduce costs.
• Develop manpower plans based on backlog, service demand, project schedules, and business growth.
• Improve scheduling, dispatching, labor utilization, staffing levels, and workforce productivity.

Process Improvement & Standardization

• Develop and implement consistent operational processes, procedures, and management routines.
• Identify inefficiencies and lead continuous improvement initiatives.
• Ensure effective utilization of scheduling, dispatch, project management, inventory, ERP, and reporting systems.
• Support implementation of new technology and operational programs and promote best practices across the organization.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

• Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with company policies and applicable OSHA requirements.
• Partner with Safety leadership on incident prevention, corrective actions, training, and compliance.
• Ensure teams meet company quality standards and customer expectations.
• Maintain appropriate controls over inventory, equipment, vehicles, facilities, and company assets.

Cross-Functional & People Leadership

• Partner with Sales and Project Management to align backlog, customer commitments, manpower, and operational capacity.
• Partner with Finance and Accounting on operational reporting, job costing, billing support, budgeting, and forecasting.
• Recruit, develop, coach, and retain operational leaders while building succession plans and internal bench strength.
• Communicate operational risks, staffing needs, performance issues, and improvement plans to senior leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

• 8-10 years of progressive operations leadership experience preferred, with experience in Division 8 - Doors, Frames & Hardware, commercial construction, specialty contracting, or a related industry strongly preferred.
• Experience leading managers and multiple operational functions, including field installation, service, production, warehouse, and/or logistics.
• Demonstrated experience managing labor productivity, financial performance, KPIs, workforce planning, and operational improvement.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
• Proven ability to develop leaders and build accountable, high-performing teams.
• Proficiency with ERP, field-service, scheduling, project management, and reporting systems.
• Bachelor's degree in Business, Operations Management, Construction Management, or related discipline preferred; equivalent industry and leadership experience may be considered.
