The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the direction and supervision of nursing staff and activities, ensuring efficiency in meeting departmental goals and objectives. The DON makes administrative decisions based on knowledge of long-term care policies and nursing standards, and ensures compliance with nursing practice standards to promote optimal healthcare delivery. Responsibilities include interpreting and implementing administrative and resident care policies, interviewing and hiring nursing management and supervisory staff, assigning professional staff, and evaluating personnel.
The DON chairs supervisory and nurse manager meetings, conducts departmental meetings to encourage participation in policy formulation, and coordinates activities across nursing neighborhoods. The role involves fostering harmonious relationships with staff, residents, and visitors, planning staff development programs, managing nursing staff, and analyzing service quality for improvements. The DON oversees quality improvement activities and ensures their integration into the community’s overall quality program.
Additional duties include communicating with the VP and Senior Administrator on approvals, assisting with compliance to state, federal, and Joint Commission standards, managing nursing expenses, and approving invoices. Infection Preventionist duties involve specialized training, developing infection control programs, overseeing antibiotic stewardship, and participating in quality and safety committees. The DON also develops action plans, reviews policies annually, educates staff and residents on infection control, and collaborates on occupational health and safety.
Pay range: $81,681 - $136,136 annually
