Under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer and within federal, state, and local guidelines, performs advanced (senior-level) nursing work. Work involves planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing activities and providing for the care and treatment of individuals served. Work may include serving as a resource on nursing practices and education programs by performing consultative and administrative work. Assigns and supervises the work of others.
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the administration and evaluation of nursing services at Denton County MHMR Center. The DON determines nursing service requirements, delegates nursing care and treatment, and supervises nursing staff across various teams and clinics. This role requires management experience and clinical expertise with individuals with chronic mental illness, along with the ability to prioritize and coordinate services efficiently. The position ensures compliance with all relevant health and safety standards, participates in planning and policy development, and works collaboratively with other department leaders.
Essential duties include providing administrative oversight, clinical supervision, staff training, medication education, direct nursing services, crisis triage, documentation, budget management, infection control, staff hiring, performance evaluation, and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards. The role also involves participating in meetings, policy development, and interagency coordination to enhance service delivery.
Qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), two years of supervisory experience, and at least one year of experience working with individuals diagnosed with mental illness and developmental disabilities. Candidates must hold a current RN license in Texas, maintain professional licensure, and complete required continuing education. Knowledge of nursing techniques, healthcare laws, community health principles, and computer skills is essential. Strong leadership, communication, crisis management, and organizational skills are also required.
