Job summary

The Associated Press in New York is seeking a hands-on, strategic Director of Cyber Engineering to lead security engineering across product security, infrastructure and cloud security, cloud governance and network security. You will inherit and lead a team of established engineers, set technical direction for security engineering and turn security strategy into scalable platforms and practices.

Building partnerships across Technology and the wider AP organization will be central to this role.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in security engineering, security architecture or infrastructure engineering with 4+ years leading teams.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
• Hands-on in at least two AP focus areas: product security, cloud/infrastructure security, cloud governance or network security.
• Experience in major public cloud environments and hybrid infrastructure.
• Strong security and DevSecOps practices in modern software environments.
• Experience designing and operating enterprise network security architectures.
• Security automation, scripting or coding and infrastructure‑as‑code experience.
• Ability to influence across engineering, business and nontechnical teams.
• Certifications such as CISSP/CCSP/OSCP or cloud security certs are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute a security engineering roadmap across product, infrastructure, cloud and network security.
• Own security architecture standards for cloud, on‑premises and network environments.
• Advance zero trust, least-privilege and secure-by-default infrastructure.
• Evaluate threats and AI risks and translate into engineering priorities.
• Embed security into the software development lifecycle with threat modeling and secure design reviews.
• Partner to integrate security into CI/CD pipelines without slowing delivery.
• Lead security architecture and hardening of cloud and infrastructure environments.
• Establish cloud governance, guardrails and posture management.
• Drive security automation and infrastructure‑as‑code.
• Lead the security engineering team and foster a culture of ownership and continuous learning.
• Develop stakeholder relationships and communicate risk to leadership.
