Job summary

John Hancock in Boston seeks a Director, Artificial Intelligence to lead an AI team supporting the Long Term Care program. This leadership role drives production-grade AI and ML solutions, shaping strategy and delivering measurable business value.

You will manage AI Engineers and Data Scientists, guide architecture across GenAI, MLOps, and cloud platforms, and partner with business and risk teams to ensure compliant, secure, scalable AI deployments.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in AI, data science, ML, analytics or related fields.
• 3+ years leading or managing technical teams of Data Scientists or AI Engineers.
• Hands-on background as an individual contributor in AI, data science, ML, or AI engineering.
• Proven experience delivering AI/ML from concept to production with deployment and value measurement.
• Strong knowledge of GenAI, LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG, embeddings, guardrails, and responsible AI practices.
• Advanced Python and SQL programming.
• Experience with Azure and modern AI/ML platforms (Azure ML, Databricks, MLflow).
• Strong understanding of MLOps, CI/CD, monitoring, governance, and production support.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and delivery of AI, ML, and GenAI solutions for the LTC business strategy.
• Manage and develop a team of AI Engineers and Data Scientists; provide coaching and career development.
• Own complex AI initiatives from problem definition through deployment and value measurement.
• Partner with business leaders to identify high-value AI opportunities and translate needs into technical solutions.
• Provide technical leadership across traditional data science, ML, GenAI, LLMs, and production AI engineering.
• Oversee deployment of production-grade AI services with cloud, MLOps, DevOps, and CI/CD practices.
