Job Description
Director of Admissions

Behavioral Health | Greater Philadelphia Area - Norristown, PA. 19403

Compensation: Approximately $120,000

A well-established behavioral health organization in the Greater Philadelphia area is seeking an experienced Director of Admissions to lead and oversee its Admissions Department and play a critical role in ensuring individuals seeking treatment receive timely, appropriate, and compassionate access to care.

This is a highly visible leadership position for someone who understands that admissions sits at the intersection of clinical care, operations, patient experience, compliance, and organizational performance. The Director will oversee day-to-day admissions operations while developing the people, processes, and systems necessary to support efficient patient flow and strong clinical outcomes.

The Opportunity

The Director of Admissions will provide strategic and operational leadership for the admissions function, overseeing the screening and coordination of prospective admissions while ensuring compliance with organizational policies and applicable regulatory requirements.

This individual will work closely with clinical leadership, physicians, nursing, administrative teams, and other internal stakeholders to manage bed availability, patient flow, pre-admission requirements, and admissions priorities.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on people leader and self-starter who can balance compassion with accountability, remain composed in challenging situations, and continuously evaluate how admissions processes can be improved.

Key Responsibilities

Lead, organize, and oversee daily Admissions Department operations.

Provide direct supervision, coaching, mentorship, training, and performance management for admissions staff.

Maintain appropriate staffing levels and workload assignments to support effective daily operations.

Oversee patient screening and pre-admission processes, including review of relevant medical and clinical information.

Partner closely with physicians, clinical teams, nursing, and administrative leadership to coordinate timely and appropriate admissions.

Manage bed availability, occupancy, waiting lists, and patient flow while supporting continuity of care.

Develop and improve workflows, procedures, and service standards across the admissions function.

Monitor admissions data, referral activity, operational performance, and outcomes to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.

Maintain strong processes surrounding regulatory compliance, documentation, patient safety, and quality.

Address complex or emotionally sensitive patient, family, or customer situations with professionalism, compassion, and strong de-escalation skills.

Help resolve admissions conflicts involving clinical priorities, bed availability, and operational considerations.

Build productive relationships with internal departments and external referral partners.

Participate in interviewing, hiring, onboarding, development, and retention of Admissions team members.

Contribute to broader organizational initiatives, committees, and leadership priorities.

Participate in the organization's leadership/on-call structure as required.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate combines behavioral health expertise with strong operational and people leadership.

Qualified candidates should bring:

Master's degree in a related field.

Approximately 3–5+ years of relevant behavioral health experience, ideally including leadership within admissions, case management, clinical operations, patient access, or a closely related function.

Experience working within behavioral health, mental health, and/or substance use treatment environments.

Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, and developing teams.

Strong understanding of admissions processes, clinical coordination, patient flow, and operational workflow.

Ability to maintain effective processes while ensuring regulatory and organizational compliance.

Experience using data, metrics, and outcomes to evaluate performance and guide decision-making.

Strong judgment and the ability to navigate competing priorities and make thoughtful decisions in a fast-paced environment.

Excellent communication, collaboration, conflict-resolution, and de-escalation skills.

Comfort working across clinical, operational, and administrative teams.

Experience working with electronic medical record systems; behavioral-health EMR experience is strongly valued.

Leadership Profile

Beyond technical experience, we are seeking someone who is:

A People Leader — Someone who develops others, establishes clear expectations, and creates accountability while building a strong and collaborative team.

Operationally Minded — Someone who can evaluate processes, identify inefficiencies, and translate data and outcomes into meaningful improvements.

Compassionate & Composed — Someone capable of navigating sensitive situations with patients, families, employees, and clinical partners while maintaining professionalism and empathy.

Self-Directed — A leader who takes ownership, identifies what needs to happen, and moves initiatives forward without requiring constant direction.

Collaborative — Someone who can successfully operate across clinical, nursing, administrative, and operational functions and build credibility throughout the organization.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This position offers the opportunity to lead a function that directly influences both the patient experience and the organization's ability to provide timely access to behavioral health treatment.

For a leader who enjoys developing teams, improving systems, solving operational challenges, and making a meaningful impact within behavioral healthcare, this is an opportunity to take ownership of a critical department and help shape how individuals enter and experience care.
