Director of Nursing - Medical Surgical Units

Job Summary:

The Director of Nursing for Med/Surg Units provides daily operational administration for nursing and other patient care areas at Westchester Medical Center. The Director supervises, coordinates, implements, and directs ongoing administrative aspects of assigned service lines. The role involves recommending to the Assistant Vice President of Patient Care Services areas requiring evaluation and change, and implementing nursing and patient care programs. In the absence of the Assistant Vice President, the Director is responsible for administration of these service lines. Supervision includes nursing, professional, clerical, and ancillary personnel.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervises and directs administrative aspects of nursing and patient care areas.
  • Participates in evaluating nursing and clinical practices through peer review.
  • Establishes institutional standards of practice in cooperation with professional standards.
  • Sets qualifications for staff levels in collaboration with the Vice President of Hospital Nursing Service and Education.
  • Coordinates implementation of nursing policies via staff conferences and directives.
  • Develops educational programs for staff.
  • Conducts staff evaluations through individual conferences.
  • Participates in labor-management discussions.
  • Coordinates clinical programs with department heads.
  • Recommends staffing patterns based on service line needs.
  • Analyzes data and recommends improvements in patient care services.
  • Monitors and evaluates quality improvement activities.
  • Participates in hospital and medical board committees.
  • Assists in developing department budgets.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars as required.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Experience: Minimum of 6 years of professional nursing experience, including 3 years in a supervisory role.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Nursing and six years of professional nursing experience, including three in supervision.

Licenses / Certifications: Valid nursing license and current certification.
