Job description

The Director of Nursing is a key nursing leader responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care within the Medical-Surgical service line. The Director leads and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to enhance clinical operations, drive performance improvement, and support regulatory readiness. This position ensures nursing standards are upheld while supporting strategic initiatives, clinical excellence, and staff engagement. The role serves as a mentor, leader, and operational resource for Nurse Managers and frontline staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides operational oversight and leadership for Med/Surg nursing units, ensuring quality, safe, and efficient care delivery.
  • Collaborates with AVP and Medical Director to translate clinical goals into operational plans, aligning with hospital and network priorities.
  • Leads strategic and operational initiatives that improve patient outcomes, throughput, and patient experience.
  • Oversees budget development, monitoring, and variance reporting for assigned units.
  • Champions nursing quality improvement initiatives; monitors performance metrics and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepares departments for accreditation, surveys, and compliance with CMS, DNV, NYS DOH, and Magnet standards.
  • Directly supervises and develops Nurse Managers and supports their professional growth and succession planning.
  • Participates in Administrator-on-Call rotation and leads in times of operational crisis.
  • Fosters collaboration across interdisciplinary teams, facilitating education, team building, and process improvement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

Experience: Minimum 5 years of progressive nursing leadership experience in acute care settings, preferably in medical/surgical units required.

Education: BSN required; Master's degree in Nursing, Health Administration, or related field preferred.

Licenses / Certifications: Valid NYS RN license required. BLS (AHA) certification required.

Other:

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective communicator with ability to lead diverse teams and implement complex projects.
  • In-depth understanding of clinical standards, staffing models, and evidence-based practice.
  • Proficiency with EMR and healthcare operations tools.

Special Requirements: Exposure to patient care settings may occur.
