Job Summary

The Director of Nursing for Med/Surg Units provides daily operational administration for nursing and other patient care areas at Westchester Medical Center. The Director supervises, coordinates, implements, and directs ongoing administrative aspects of assigned service lines. The role involves recommending to the Assistant Vice President of Patient Care Services areas requiring evaluation and change, and implementing nursing and patient care programs. In the absence of the AVP, the Director is responsible for these service lines. Supervision includes nursing, professional, clerical, and ancillary personnel.

Responsibilities:
  1. Supervise and coordinate administrative aspects of nursing and patient care areas.
  2. Participate in evaluating nursing and clinical practice through peer review.
  3. Establish institutional standards of practice in cooperation with professional standards.
  4. Set qualifications for staff levels with the Vice President of Hospital Nursing Service and Education.
  5. Implement nursing policies and procedures via staff conferences and directives.
  6. Assist in developing staff education programs.
  7. Conduct staff evaluations through individual conferences.
  8. Coordinate clinical programs with department heads as needed.
  9. Recommend staffing patterns based on service line needs.
  10. Evaluate data and recommend improvements for patient care services.
  11. Monitor and evaluate quality improvement activities.
  12. Participate in hospital and medical board committees.
  13. Assist in developing department budgets.
  14. Attend meetings, conferences, and seminars as required.
Qualifications/Requirements:

Experience: At least 6 years of professional nursing experience, including 3 years in a supervisory role.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and six years of professional nursing experience, including three years supervisory.

Licenses / Certifications: Valid nursing license and current certification.
