The Director of Engineering is a senior technical and business leader responsible for the development, execution, and continuous improvement of power generation, microgrid, and distributed energy solutions across North America. This role provides strategic leadership for engineering, project development, technical sales support, product integration, and project execution activities involving gas turbine power generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), emissions-control technologies, and balance-of-plant infrastructure.
Serves as the primary technical authority for complex power-generation projects, including AI and hyperscale data center applications, microgrids, utility support systems, and industrial power solutions. The position requires strong expertise in gas turbine package integration, power plant design, EPC coordination, engineering governance, and commercial support throughout the opportunity lifecycle.
Working closely with executive leadership, customers, OEMs, EPC contractors, developers, utilities, and internal teams, the Director of Engineering drives technical excellence, project success, market growth, and customer satisfaction while ensuring safe, reliable, and cost-effective project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop multidisciplinary engineering teams supporting power generation, microgrid, energy storage, emissions control, and balance-of-plant projects.
- Establish engineering standards, design procedures, technical review processes, and quality-control practices across the organization.
- Serve as the final technical authority for engineering design reviews, equipment selection, integration strategies, and project execution decisions.
- Ensure engineering deliverables comply with applicable codes, standards, utility requirements, customer specifications, and industry best practices.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on engineering quality, project execution, safety, reliability, and cost optimization.
- Support recruitment, mentoring, performance management, and professional development of engineering personnel.
- Lead the technical development and execution of microgrid and distributed generation projects.
- Direct system-level design and integration of gas turbines, BESS systems, control systems, electrical infrastructure, and balance-of-plant equipment.
- Provide technical leadership for power solutions supporting AI and hyperscale data centers, including high-density load profiles, reliability requirements, resiliency strategies, and rapid deployment schedules.
- Evaluate generation technologies and optimize system architectures based on customer requirements, operating conditions, lifecycle economics, and project objectives.
- Oversee power system studies, equipment integration, plant performance analyses, and reliability assessments.
- Provide strategic technical leadership for projects involving GE, Rolls-Royce, Siemens, Baker Hughes, Solar Turbines, and other OEM power-generation equipment.
- Guide engineering teams in the selection, integration, and deployment of gas turbine generation packages and associated auxiliary systems.
- Review equipment configurations, plant layouts, operating philosophies, and performance guarantees.
- Support lifecycle planning, maintainability evaluations, and operational optimization initiatives.
- Develop technical standards related to packaged generation systems and distributed power applications.
- Lead integration strategies involving Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) within microgrid, peaking, backup generation, and utility-support applications.
- Provide oversight for SCR system design, integration, compliance, and deployment activities.Ensure projects meet applicable environmental, safety, and permitting requirements.Support engineering decisions related to emissions reduction technologies, operating efficiency, and long-term system performance.Lead engineering support through all project phases, including development, proposal, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations support.Coordinate engineering activities with EPC contractors, OEMs, consultants, utilities, and customer stakeholders.Provide technical oversight of balance-of-plant design, including electrical systems, mechanical systems, civil works, controls, and interconnection infrastructure.Manage technical risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies throughout project execution.Support construction planning, contractor management, site activities, and project startup efforts.Provide leadership and technical support for equipment installation, startup, commissioning, testing, and customer acceptance activities.Support troubleshooting efforts involving generation equipment, controls, emissions systems, and balance-of-plant infrastructure.Drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions to improve reliability and operating performance.Collaborate with operations and service teams to enhance asset availability, maintainability, and lifecycle performance.Participate in major outage planning and critical customer support activities as required.Partner with sales and executive leadership to identify, qualify, and develop strategic opportunities.Provide technical leadership during opportunity qualification and go/no-go decision processes.Support pricing strategies, commercial evaluations, and risk assessments.Lead development of technical proposals, quotations, RFQs, RFP responses, and tender submissions.
- Participate in customer presentations, technical workshops, and executive-level discussions.
- Support contract negotiations by evaluating technical scope, commercial risk, performance guarantees, and execution requirements.
- Develop market intelligence regarding competitors, technology trends, customer requirements, and industry developments.
- Maintain a strong understanding of utility, industrial, data center, operator, and service-company purchasing processes.
- Support revenue forecasting, backlog management, resource planning, and strategic business initiatives.
- Monitor engineering workloads and align resources with business objectives.
- Utilize CRM and project management systems to track opportunities, project status, customer engagement, and forecast accuracy.
- Establish and monitor departmental KPIs related to safety, quality, project execution, customer satisfaction, profitability, and engineering performance.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 10+ years of progressive engineering experience within power generation, distributed energy, microgrids, EPC, or related industries.
- 5+ years of engineering leadership, engineering management, or technical director-level experience.
- Demonstrated experience with gas turbine power-generation systems and packaged generation solutions.
- Strong understanding of microgrid architectures, distributed generation, and power system integration.
- Experience supporting power infrastructure for industrial facilities, mission-critical operations, or data center environments.
- Experience supporting EPC projects, power plant construction, commissioning, and startup activities.
- Proven success leading multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
- Strong commercial acumen with experience supporting sales, proposals, contract negotiations, and business development activities.
- Excellent communication, leadership, customer management, and presentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, Power Systems, or Business Administration (MBA).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience supporting AI or hyperscale data center power infrastructure projects.
- Experience with utility interconnection, grid-support requirements, and power market applications.
- Knowledge of BESS technologies and integration within power generation applications.
- Knowledge of SCR systems, emissions-control technologies, and environmental compliance considerations.
- PMP certification or formal project management training.
- Experience working with international engineering, procurement, and manufacturing organizations.
- Established relationships within the power generation, energy infrastructure, EPC, utility, or data center industries.
