The Director, EPC – AI/HPC Data Centers will join a fast-paced, high-performing team responsible for leading the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) execution of MARA’s AI/HPC data center program.
This role is accountable for end-to-end EPC delivery across projects ranging from single-site deployments to large, multi-phase, utility-scale campuses. The Director will oversee engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational handover while ensuring projects meet safety, quality, schedule, cost, and commercial objectives. Partnering closely with the VP of Site Development and senior leadership, the Director will lead EPC strategy and execution and serve as a primary interface with EPC contractors, OEMs, utilities, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
The ideal candidate is an experienced data center EPC leader with deep expertise in engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and large-scale program delivery. They bring strong commercial and technical acumen, executive presence, and a proven ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives and deliver mission-critical infrastructure at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the strategy and execution of AI/HPC data center programs from site selection through design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational handover.
- Oversee delivery across single-site deployments and large, multi-phase, utility-scale campuses.
- Develop and execute delivery strategies aligned with project objectives, capacity requirements, schedules, and commercial goals.
- Direct early-stage development activities, including site evaluation, master planning, capacity planning, and delivery strategy.
- Evaluate and implement modular, prefabricated, and other innovative construction solutions where appropriate.
- Support permitting, entitlement, and utility interconnection workstreams as needed.
- Oversee design execution across civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, and controls disciplines.
- Manage architects, engineers, consultants, and EPC partners throughout the design lifecycle.
- Drive design optimization, standardization, constructability, and cost efficiency through data-driven engineering and industry best practices.
- Ensure designs align with project requirements, operational objectives, applicable standards, and overall delivery strategy.
Procurement & Commercial Management
- Lead procurement strategy for major long-lead equipment and EPC/GC contracts.
- Oversee technical evaluations, bid leveling, vendor selection, and commercial negotiations.
- Partner with procurement, engineering, finance, and legal teams to ensure contracts support project objectives.
- Manage relationships with major equipment suppliers, OEMs, EPC contractors, and other strategic partners.
- Drive accountability for commercial commitments, procurement schedules, and equipment delivery.
- Provide executive oversight of construction activities and EPC/GC performance.
- Ensure contractors meet established safety, quality, schedule, cost, and commercial objectives.
- Direct installation, testing, commissioning, and system integration activities.
- Resolve critical technical and execution issues and drive timely corrective actions.
- Ensure successful transition from construction and commissioning into operational handover.
Program Governance & Reporting
- Own program governance, KPI reporting, risk management, and corrective-action processes.
- Establish and maintain appropriate project controls and performance metrics across active programs.
- Monitor schedule, budget, risk, quality, and contractor performance.
- Deliver executive-level project updates, financial reporting, and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Identify emerging risks and develop mitigation strategies to maintain project performance.
Executive & Stakeholder Leadership
- Serve as a senior-level interface with EPC contractors, OEMs, utilities, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
- Build strong executive relationships and establish clear accountability for project commitments.
- Lead cross-functional teams across development, engineering, procurement, construction, finance, operations, and other functions.
- Communicate complex technical, commercial, and project information clearly to executive leadership.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
AI/HPC & Data Center Technology
- Stay current on emerging AI/HPC data center technologies and infrastructure requirements.
- Evaluate developments in high-density computing, liquid cooling, advanced power infrastructure, and data center design.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, scalability, standardization, and cost effectiveness across MARA’s data center portfolio.
Travel
- Travel approximately 20–30% within the United States.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- 10+ years of leadership experience delivering engineering and construction programs.
- Strong knowledge of data center design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and program delivery.
- Solid understanding of electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering principles.
- Working knowledge of site permitting, entitlement, and utility interconnection for large infrastructure projects.
- Proven ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams, EPCs, OEMs, consultants, utilities, and other external partners.
- Strong analytical, financial, commercial, and executive decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with demonstrated executive presence.
- Proven ability to manage multiple complex, high-value programs in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Project, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Willingness to travel approximately 20–30% within the United States.
