Job summary

Ryan Specialty is seeking a Director I of Catastrophe Modeling to lead analytics for the Central Underwriting organization, combining modeling science, data engineering, and underwriting strategy. The role owns technical execution of cat modeling, tooling, pipelines, and automation; builds and mentors a team; and translates model output into underwriting guidance for executive leadership.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of progressive experience in catastrophe modeling, portfolio risk analytics, or related data engineering.
• Hands-on proficiency with RMS and/or AIR Touchstone—exposure prep, batch processing, results interpretation.
• Strong SQL skills and automation experience with Python, R, VBA, or Alteryx.
• Experience translating model output into underwriting/portfolio decisions.
• Ability to lead teams through real-time catastrophe event response.
• Experience coordinating portfolio rollups and external deliverables to carriers or reinsurance partners.
• Cross-functional collaboration with Capital Management, Pricing, Reserving, and Data Engineering.
• Excellent communication delivering technical insight to stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Build and mentor a team of cat modeling analysts and automation developers.
• Set technical roadmap for cat modeling, data engineering, and reporting tooling.
• Bridge catastrophe analytics with underwriting leadership and appetite decisions.
• Oversee portfolio rollups and external delivery to carriers and partners.
• Lead research to extend analytics capabilities (uncertainty, model blending, climate view).
• Standardize data contracts and handoffs across partner teams.
• Drive vendor strategy for RMS, AIR, Analyze Re, and related tooling.
