Job summary

UnitedHealth Group, through Optum, is hiring a Director, Benefits Planning and Strategy to govern Directed Spend benefit programs, translating CMS guidance into scalable strategy, governance guardrails, and execution frameworks.

This role partners across Sales, Account Management, Product, Operations and control functions to ensure compliant benefit design, client alignment, and scalable delivery while exploring AI-enabled improvements across the organization.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, benefits administration, or healthcare strategy.
• Experience building governance and operational processes in healthcare/financial services.
• Ability to translate CMS guidance into business strategy, governance and execution.
• Proven influence with senior leadership and cross-functional alignment.
• Executive presence with ability to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.
• Experience solving enterprise-level challenges and using AI tools to boost productivity.

Responsibilities

• Govern benefit governance and regulatory strategy; serve as SME on Directed Spend and CMS guidance.
• Translate CMS regulations into actionable guidance, frameworks, and guardrails.
• Own enterprise governance for Approved Product (APL) strategy and controls.
• Support sales and readiness cycles; update approved product lists and answer rationale questions.
• Ensure alignment of benefit designs with client needs, product capabilities, and contracts.
• Influence senior leaders to adopt solutions balancing customer outcomes and regulatory needs.
• Lead or contribute to embedding AI solutions and modernizing operating models.
