This role requires five years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, welding skills, and a valid driver’s license with a DOT medical card; CDL preferred. You will perform inspections, diagnose issues, and conduct heavy repairs while complying with FRA rules.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • Inspect and troubleshoot heavy equipment components including gas and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, work heads, booms, electrical systems, and conveyor belt systems.
  • Perform heavy repairs to all types of equipment components.
  • Diagnose and resolve work‑related problems, make decisions and provide instructions.
  • Drive heavy duty service truck, including truck‑mounted crane.
  • Other duties as assigned during emergencies.

Job Overview

The Machinist (Diesel Mechanic) repairs and maintains heavy equipment and roadway machinery at construction sites.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • Inspect and troubleshoot heavy equipment components including gas and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, work heads, booms, electrical systems, and conveyor belt systems.
  • Perform heavy repairs to all types of equipment components.
  • Diagnose and resolve work‑related problems, make decisions and provide instructions.
  • Drive heavy duty service truck, including truck‑mounted crane.
  • Other duties as assigned during emergencies.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent educational credential.
  • Five years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic.
  • Welding experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with DOT medical card and hoisting license (commercial driver’s license (CDL) preferred).
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, electronic and pneumatic systems related to roadway machinery operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds individually or up to 100 pounds with a coworker.
  • Physical and mental demands: stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb occasionally.
  • Work outside in all types of weather conditions year‑round; shift work and overtime may be required.
  • Travel to different locations required.
Additional Requirements
  • Employment contingent upon passing a pre‑employment drug and alcohol screen and receiving a favorable background check.
  • Proven ability and practical experience with repairing and maintaining heavy equipment and roadway machinery at construction sites (Preferred 5 years).
  • Certifications: Driver’s License required; CDL preferred.
Compensation

Rate: $38.16 per hour.
